anyone not do a ride in?

I ran into the Bill Mayer booth at the San Mateo bike show a few weeks back and he had a deal where I can get both my front and rear seat done for about 400 bucks. I would love to do a ride in (have is scheduled for the 2nd of feb).

Problem is I am not sure I can do the ride in, so I may have to resort to sending in a photo and measurements. Has anyone done this? do you still get a good seat?

Sorry, no experience with Mayer. However, I had a Russell Daylong saddle built last year, from photos of me on the bike, plus my measurements.

I love it, and would not hesitate to do it again.

I would think that the folks at Mayer should be able to do the same.

Most people do the mail in photo version. I did a ride in for a Russell. My friend did a mail in for a Russell and we later did a ride in (while in the neighborhood) with his to do some fine tuning.

I suppose the advantage to a ride in is they build the seat without the cover on and you sit on it to try it. You can then say a little high here, a little low there, seems to tilt me this way or that. They then recontour the foam and try again until you think you have it nailed. You need to know your own butt but I think ride ins are to way to go if you are anywhere in the area and can arrange it.

By the way, my custom Russsell is far and away the best farkel I have bought in 110K on my scoot. I understand the Mayer boys both have many many satisfied customers also.

I rode in

Ojai, CA and I rode to his place, Bill Mayer's(Rocky),for my current seat. Hope you can ride in, because I find it a great way to get the seat perfect, as you watch and try it on, while its made. I've done several seats from Corbin, Russel and Mayer Senior and all of mine have been done while I watch. The shipping method is a mainstay also and many have no options and I have been lucky to live in the same state and a days ride away from many seat makers. Rocky's crew did a fine job on my new GSA1200. Randy

Ride in is worth it

I rode into Bill Mayer's place, it is worth it. Especially for the R1200RT, also my ride. As one responder mentioned to you, you get it finetuned for your ass AND main riding position. Got there at 7 and out by 10:30. This included @ 3fittings, some cutting, they see how you sit, etc. Also then rode it for 30 minutes and came it for the final tune-up. They covered it and I was gone, got back to TX and had a Thank You card from my ass. Don't know where, but someplace it managed to drop it into the mail, that was thoughtful. Your in Mountainside, call them and make an apt.

So of the three . . . any comments / observations? Some of us are not close enough for a ride in.

Hi, I have had two seats from Russell. I rode in for one and I sent pictures for the other. I cannot tell the difference. The one thing I liked about the ride in was that once the seat was "roughed out" I was able to sit on it and the builder could see where adjustments were needed before final assembly. On the other hand I paid a premium for the ride in, which I did not pay for the mail order. The other issue with the ride in is how far in advance you need to book. In the case of Russell it was several months.

In both cases I have been happy with the seats and the first one is now twenty five years old and still going strong.
