heated grips on an R850R

Riding in New England I really want heated grips. So I could go buy a new 1200 GS for $18,000 (just looked at Greater Boston Motorsports-sigh) but that ain't going to happen.

So I bought a kit to install my own. It requires tapping into a line for power and ground. The head lamp wiring seems like a good candidate, so I found the casing going into the headlamp and opened it up.

Can anyone tell me what the 5 wires are? Am I nuts to tap into them?

Thanks!

Is the live needed to power a relay or power the grips? I thought I read somewhere that the headlight on some BMWs is not fused?? If true I would not want to run heated grips off that circuit. I'm sure that someone who knows will answer soon.

I think the draw for the heated grips and the light would be too many amps for those wires. Go to the fuse block or the battery.

The little bit of poking around I have done on the wiring harness of my '99 leads me to think that I would not feed any new equipment off the stock harness. Like said above I would go back to a new accessory fuse block wired directly to the battery. If you were looking for power to simply trigger a relay fed from another source maybe, but not with a load like heated grips. Find a wiring diagram for your bike perhaps there is already wiring in your harness for heated grips but, I'm thinking not.

My '96 R850R has heated grips which I think are original equipment. In the "Service and Technical Booklet" that came with it, fuse #7 in the junction box is listed as being for the heated handlebar grips. You could see if there's any wiring set up for that fuse on your bike, and it might be a good place to start. The fuses are numbered starting with #1 closest to the left side of the bike, and #7 is a 4 amp fuse.

Took your advise and simply tied into the battery. I found that the head lamp was grounded, and the rest was pretty easy.

Thanks everyone.

Instead of using the headlight ground, you may want to run a dedicated ground wire to the battery. The grip heaters may overload the headlight ground.
Just a thought
