OK; we are all Cheap Bastards?® ... or at least most of us are (or we might own bikes less than 20 years old), so we would prefer not to ship our speedo heads off to a shop and pay an obscene amount to get it fixed. The same thing goes for E28 BMW guys (I am one of them.). We E28ers have known about Jeff Caplan's Odometer Gears Ltd. for some time now. His directions are clear and simple, so you do it yourself. I installed a set of his gears in my nonfunctional E28 dash last year and I am delighted with the result - at a retail cost of under $75.
Last week, I met Jeff in person at BMW CCA's Oktoberfest in Watkins Glen. As he is a helluva nice guy in person, I asked him about gears other than E28s. Turns out he makes all kinds, including for BMW bikes!
Jeff, too, got tired of paying 'whatever the traffic will bear' for simple VDO parts and he had some plastic casting skills and equipment. So he started out by making his own. Then he sold some. And so the story goes. If you have a busted Airhead speedo/odo, it's worth asking Jeff about a gearset. Hit his website at Odometer Gears or call him at 757-593-3478. Tell him C.R. sent you. Maybe he'll buy me lunch next time ...
