My 1997 1100GS is typically running fine. On occasion, when I start it, the engine will start, but run rough. At the same time the alternator light will light very dimly. I turn off the key switch and restart the engine and everything is fine. Engine runs smoothly and the alternator light goes out instantly upon a slight engine rev. I swear that it feels like some relay is not engaging fully until it is reenergized. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Gail,
The engine needs to be spinning 1,000RPM before the diode trio in the alternator will do it job of creating field current. Sometimes, even if the alternator is good but your idle is below 1,000, it can keep the BATT lamp lit. There is no relay in that circuit at all.
