'02 wiring harness problem

I have a 2002 F650GS that recently had a problem. The wiring harness under the dash/gage area was rubbing on the headlight housing (unknown to me) and when I went to start the bike, it shorted out, causing a lot of smoke. The bike has approx. 23,000 miles on it and from what I have heard, some others have run into this problem. Something tells me this is a design flaw that BMW has. Has anyone else had this problem? Luckly, the bike is still under warranty and is at the shop although I'm still waiting to hear if BMW will cover it.

I haven't had the problem, but after reading your post I took my headlight housing apart, turned the offending wire harness 90 degrees in its mount and zip tied it into place, well out of harm's way.
Thanks for the warning.

If this keeps anyone from having the same problem then I've accomplished something. I'm bringing pictures and any responses to had over to the BMW reps at the rally in Spokane.
