So I'll be renting in Hawaii (the big island) this month...

In a few weeks I'll be on the big island in Hawaii. I plan to rent a bike for some 2-up riding. Especially after reading the other rental thread thats active right now... can any of you recommend a rental company that you've used there? Hilo side would be preferable, but not absolutely necessary.

From an internet search it looks like there's a handful of Harley rentals on the island. I did find one Goldwing rental, but their web site no longer exists... I haven't tried calling them yet. I've ridden Harleys before... I'm inclined to try the Honda just because I haven't been on one before.

Rental Issues

Be sure to check with your insurance company on what they will cover and ask the rental company to fax you a copy of the rental agreement before your rent. One thing that disturbes me is that they can charge you a daily rental until the cycle is fixed if it is wrecked in your possesion. If you insurance will not cover it, it will be an very expensive rental. Imagine a damaged cycle being tied up until parts are shipped to Hawaii.

Plus make sure the cycle is exactly what you contracted for. When you rent a motorcycle you want the experience not transportation.

Here is a thread about my less than perfect experience with a rental.

I've rented directly from Kona Harley Davidson probably 3 times and have never had a problem. http://www.konaharleydavidson.com. We've rented fat boys and v-rods. Only problem with the v-rod is the peanut sized gas tank.

When Heidi and I participated in the Aloha 1000 a couple of years ago, we rented HD's from the dealership in Kona. Owns and operated the Hilo dealership also. Nice people and easy to work with.

We have rented HD's on Maui in years past. They have an issue with people riding the road to Hana and might have restrictions. It might be a don't ask, don't tell situation.

The road to Hana is paved. I think what's missing from the discussion is that rental companies (at least for renting cages) won't let you drive all the way around the south end of the island. If you drive from Kahalui to Hana along the north and east side of the island, you're fine. If you drive to Hana from the road to Haleakala and around the south and east side of the island, you'll encounter some unpaved stretches.

I've driven a Ford Taurus rental all the way around Haleakala without problem. What the rental companies don't know the rental companies don't know.

Roadcut on the western shore of Honomanu Bay. Road to Hana, one of the most winding and beautiful paved roads in the world. Hana Road is a long and winding 41 miles, with over 600 curves and 54 bridges

The Road to Hana is a tight paved road. Once you get to Hana, you can then decide to do the circle route or to back track on the same road back. Barb and I did the round trip. The road is dirt after Hana on the round trip. We did the round trip in one very long day.

Road from Hana, Stop at Seven Pools Ranger Station to see if the back road is open for all types of vehicle

Road from Hana. Some blind corners you had to beep your horn to alert oncoming vehicles
