'99 F650: fuel/carb question

I love my "99 Funduro, but I've got one nagging problem I'm hoping someone can help me with: As a habit, I shut off the fuel petcock whenever I turn off the bike, but if I happen to forget, gas apparently continues to run through the carbs and into the cylinder, flooding it. If I leave the petcock open all night, there will even be a puddle of gas under the bike in the morning and of course the bike will be hard to start. Anyone else have this problem, or an idea on what the cause of this problem could be? Is this the way it's supposed to work? Thanks for any help!

The problem is a leaky fuel needle and seat. It might be a bit of grit stuck in there, or a damaged needle or seat. Physical cleaning and inspection is called for.
