I'd like to sell one of these to get a GS or pimed out Honda XR for the many backroads here in my neck of Arkansas.

30 years' difference

What a difference 30 years of development makes! Same concept, yet totally different performance level/shape/riding experience:

Ever since the R100RT came to the U.S. in 1979, I thought of it as the "big dog" and lusted after one.

Now I look at my 2009 R12RT, and can't believe how "dinky" the R100RT seems!

There is no question that in just about every way, the R12RT is leaps and bounds beyond the R100RT -- performance, handling, ABS, traction control, precision control over fuel delivery, etc. -- but the funny thing is, if I had to choose between the two, the R12 would be out the door first. The "feel" of the R100RT is somehow just where I'm at today. :thumb

Nice pictures Mark. I was going to ask you if you had to choose...

I began lusting after an RT when I first discovered bikes, but now I guess I'd go with the character of an Airhead. Gotta say though, that the newer RT's don't handle like you would expect--they are still very nimble. They look huge, until you ride one. I was completely surprised. Still want to ride a GS.

I love the size comparison. Here's on of Goldwings (I love the series I). Seems to happen to most successful bike lines over time.

wow, that is amazing. i can clearly remember the first time i rode a 1975 Wing, circa '77 or so- i thought it was massive!

cool idea above of shots of old/new versions of the bikes. Here is a HP2 sitting next to a "modified" R80G/S. About 25 years of change

My airhead on cover of BMW's ON

That's my airhead ofthe cover ofthe March issue. Photo taken by eric morely of Banner Elk, N. C. I sold Eric a bike and when he picked it up he saw my R90and fell in love. He took a number of pictures that day and I signed arelease saying he could use the pictures as he saw fit. Never thought about the cover of BMW"s ON.

The cover photo is about 2 1/2 years old. Here is a photo I took this week.
