BMW GROUP AGAIN NUMBER ONE IN CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY

The BMW Group is the world-wide automotive leader in corporate sustainability, according to the latest Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI).
The industry leading position, the third in as many years, means the BMW Group is the only company in its sector to have been listed in these important sustainability indexes every year since they were established in 1999.

"We are delighted that the BMW Group is industry leader in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for the third consecutive year. This result proves once again that sustainability is firmly rooted in our corporate processes. We are convinced that sustainability throughout the value added chain, comprehensive product responsibility and a clear commitment to saving resources are all an integral part of the company's success," said Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG.

With its sustainable mobility strategy, ranging from efficiency enhancements and the increasing electrification of the power train to the long-term use of hydrogen, the BMW Group is reducing the CO2 emissions of its whole fleet. The result is that, starting in the autumn, around 40% of all the new vehicles launched by the BMW Group in Europe will emit 140 grams of CO2 or less per kilometre.

At BMW Group production sites environmental impact is being minimised and resources saved. In this way, for instance, it has been possible to reduce the energy used in production by more than 26% over the past ten years. High social standards for the employees of the BMW Group have been implemented at all locations for decades. More detailed information is available at www.bmwgroup.com/responsibility

The SAM Group analyses the economic, environmental and social performance of approximately 2500 companies and selects the best in each industry for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes. General sustainability criteria are considered as well as industry-specific challenges such as climate change. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index was the first global sustainability index to be created, in 1999, and has since been published each year by the SAM Group, based in Zurich, in cooperation with Dow Jones Indexes and STOXX Limited.

Expansion of BMW Plant Leipzig: press shop with extended component production hall in place by 2009

Leipzig. The BMW Plant Leipzig is to spread its wings under an expansion project scheduled for completion in 2009. Over the next two years a press shop including a component manufacturing wing for doors, bonnets and boot lids will take shape at the plant. The new production halls are expected to create 150 extra jobs, with predicted investment of over 100 million euros channelled into the plant. Construction work on the new halls is due to commence in late 2007.

As things stand, Leipzig sources the individual parts it needs to produce complete bodies from other BMW plants and external suppliers. In the future, however, it will be able to manufacture these parts itself. To this end, the plant's new press shop will contain a six-stage press in which metal panels are moulded into the desired forms through up to six consecutive working processes.

The second new area - the component manufacturing hall - will house the production of doors, bonnets and boot lids as part of a natural expansion of the existing body construction facility.

The licensing procedure stipulated under federal environmental protection legislation will be implemented by the Leipzig regional council. The new production machinery is not expected to place any additional burden on the environment. It goes without saying that noise limits, for example, will be observed. Another positive side effect of the new press shop will be a reduction in logistics expenditure, which will see fewer truck deliveries required into the plant.

Daily production at the BMW Plant Leipzig currently runs at approximately 700 vehicles. The BMW 3 Series Saloon, three-door BMW 1 Series and new BMW 1 Series Coup? all roll off the assembly line at the plant. The two 1 Series variants are produced exclusively at Leipzig for the global market.
