Give Mr. Traveler (M1KA) a hand!

The mileage season is just 5 days away. My goal for 2007 is 20,000 miles. What is your goal and what's on your calendar? Here is the motorcycle map of NY for choosing rides.

Here is a challenge to start the season by helping all of us that do not have the pleasure of living in your neighborhood. Assume you are directing Mr. Traveler to the Top Ten Web Sites for your State’s travel and tourism. Local knowledge always trumps the GPS and AAA Travel Guide and maybe even the Off the Beaten Path Series. If your time is limited just enter the top website(s) for your state.

Up to 5 also rans may be included. Embedded links within your annotations are fine. What would the top websites for your corner of the world be?

Multiple Entries per state and annotations are encouraged.

New York Tourism naturally divides into the following regions:

  1. Adirondacks
  2. Capital District– Saratoga Springs
  3. Catskills
  4. Chautauqua & Allegheny
  5. Finger Lakes
  6. Hudson River
  7. Leatherstocking (Central)_
  8. New York City
  9. Niagara and the St. Lawrence

1. Start your search for all things New York State at the official Empire State Website (http://www.empire.state.ny.us/) which then directs the visitor to: Tourism, Big Biz, Small Biz, High Tech and Film.

2. The Adirondacks. I live on the very edge of this old Mt. Range which has been the home of two winter Olympics. Visit this website to start your Adirondacks planning: http://visitadirondacks.com/

3. Albany is Capital of New York and just up the Hudson is Saratoga Springs the summer center of horse racing for the world. This central location is a logical encampment with rail, highway, air and water connections to the rest of the Empire State. Start your Albany planning here: http://www.roundthebend.com/capital/

4. The Catskills. A world of natural beauty awaits you in the region of wide-open spaces, mountains, lakes and rivers. Antiques, canoing, rock climbing, concerts and golf await you. Start your Catskills planning here:
http://www.catskillregiontoday.com/Catskill/default.asp

5. Chautauqua & Allegheny. This quiet corner of NY might be easily overlooked by any but the most discriminating traveler. You won't have any trouble finding the Chautauqua/Allegheny region on your map of New York State - it's as far west as you can go! Start your Chautauqua & Allegheny planning here:
http://www.tourchautauqua.com/

6. Finger Lakes. The Finger Lakes is the home to one of the best BMW rallies. The rally is popular due to superb planning and to the numerous opportunities for sightseeing. Don’t miss The Glen Curtis Museum. If your dream vacation is watching the sun set over hills across the lake from your cottage window, or observing wildlife from a cabin in the woods, you can do it in the Finger Lakes. Start your Finger Lakes planning here:
http://www.fingerlakes.org/

7. The Hudson River Valley. America’s first unique school of artists were inspired by the scenery in this valley. Watch Snoopy fight the Red Baron, visit the home of FDR, West Point or join the airheads at the world famous Annual Airheads at the Aerodrome. Start your Hudson River planning here
http://www.hudsonrivervalley.com/

8. The Leatherstocking District. Leatherstocking, NY named for the unique leather leggings worn by frontiersmen and made famous by James Fenimore Cooper, this region is the geographic heartland of the state. If you are a baseball fan head for The Baseball Hall of Fame.
Start your Leatherstocking planning here:
http://www.newyorkstatedestinations.com/leatherstocking/

9. New York City or the Big Apple or Gotham home to the Big Gig In Gotham is the Nation’s largest City. No one website can do it justice but the rules say, only website. So start with the newspaper that has all the news fit to print, The New York Times. Start your Big Apple planning here:
http://www.nytimes.com/pages/nyregion/thecity/index.html

10. The St. Lawrence River System. One of the few truly international areas in New York State, the Thousand Islands ~ Seaway Region is one of NY’s most popular vacation spots. Actually this river drains all the Great Lakes so it is not too much of a stretch to include
Detroit,
Niagara Falls,
Toronto,
Montreal and
Quebec City.

great info!!!

Being a returning rider and full time N.Y. resident I often overlooked N.Y. as a destination, usually headed off to other states with the cage, but now back on 2 wheels I find N.Y a hoot to ride the old and often overlooked secondary roads.
Thanks for the links, it will help me find more twisties!!:burnout ....

20,000 miles wow, I don't think I will top 5,000, just started a new job with no vacation this year.
I think you got N.Y.covered Paul...

Odd tourist attractions and hilarious stops for your next vacation or road trip

A site for things not usually visited in New York like Nipper in Albany:

Check out the Big Duck and the motorcycle in front of it. That Duck is not a Duc.

That's what I love about NY.. All these sweet destinations. One of the most beautiful states to ride in without a doubt. You can get lost for months.

What is your goal and what's on your calendar?

Well mileage never is a goal of mine or even a thought, but more of a by-product of some great rides and tours. I just do what I want to do; wake up in the morning, hop on the bike and go where ever.

These aren't my pics (I'll soon have my own ;) ), but this is what I expect to see...
