1200RT windshield broke...

One of the brackets that support the windshield on my RT broke, so now I don't dare raise it. Could it be from the Cee baily's windshield I installed on it?

Will take it to the dealer next week to see if they can order the part for me.

The oil level sensor has stopped working as well. I don't really think this is critical but silly me wanting things to work as I paid for them...

Eric - This has been reported by several (probably many) 1200RT owners who changed to larger Cee Bailey screens and broke one or both of the brackets. I believe all those who reported it had it repaired under warranty.

Ztechnic users seem to not have the problem. I wonder if it is just because the Ztechnic is smaller design and some of the Cee Bailey units are significantly larger than stock. I recently bought (but haven't installed yet) a new Cee Bailey screen but kept the stock height and only 1" wider in an attempt to avoid the bracket problem.

I will report my results once she's out of hibernation...

That is what I was afraid of. too bad, I really like that windshield. On a good note it has been on it since Dec 05 (about 13k miles) and it just now broke. I normally ride with it only raised up an inch or so. Just enough to get the wind over my head and still look well over the top of it.

Maybe I will go back to the stock.:(

Oil Level Sensor

Eric,

The oil level sensor stopped working on my 1200RT at about 8K miles. Since the engine needs to be plenty hot to register properly, I thought it might be due to the fact that my daily commute (~15 miles each way) is not long enough. In any case, I took it to the dealer and they detected a computer glitch. Hooked it up to the computer and reprogrammed all of the specs. It's been working fine ever since, but I hope this is not a recurring problem with my bike, or the model in general, as I had a similar issue with the ESA. Let us know how your issue is resolved.

The arm on my R1200RT windshield broke on the way to the Vermont rally. Max fixed it there under warranty. It has not broken since. And, yes, I use a tall Cee Bailey (see photo below) because the stock winshield doesn't cut it for 6'-4" me.

One thing I do now is keep the windshield all the way up or all the way down when riding at high speeds. My thought is that those positions put the least stress on the arms compared to intermediate positions. That's my intuitive vector-force analysis, so I may be all wrong.

Someone (can't remember who at the moment) is fabricating stronger arms. When and if I find out they are available I will post it.

The arms on the R1150RT are much simpler and stronger than those on the R1200RT. BMW should have stuck with the older design.

Its at the shop now and I got to pick my loner bike for the day.

My choices were
an RT (already have one of those)
a 650 GS
or a 900 Triumph Scrambler.

I took the scrambler. Cool bike, fun to drive.... granted I only did 50 miles. I wouldn't want to do 500 on one but I still had a big smile while driving it.
Sometimes, simpler is better....

Bike still wasn't done today....:cry
But I traded the loner in for a R1200R :D

an update

Windshield bracket was replaced under warrenty. They replaced the float oil level sensor and that appears to have done the trick.

Put Z6s on her, will see if I like them better then the Pilot Roads.

Mechanic says that he thinks the amount of grit that I had built up in the joints of the wind shield caused it to bind. He asked if I kepet it outside.... I have always kept it in a garage, except when touring, but I have never cleaned uder there.

Trying to decide if I want to put the big cee baily's screen on, or will I run into the same problem?

Aeroflow

I put the Aeroflow tall on my RT over a year ago (I did some of the original testing) and no problems. It gets a beating when the prevailing winds are 20-25 knots and a semi passes going the other way on a two lane, but so far no cracks in screen or the mounts.
