Kauai

Kauai, oldest & northwestern most of Hawaii's 4 major islands is also smaller, less populated, more rural, and more laid back.

We drove 375 miles in the 4 days in Kauai. We used two days in the north & two days in the south.
We stayed at the Sands Hotel in the town of Kapaa, which is on the mid-east coast.

Day 9: Tuesday, an early morning flight from Maui. We took the Northwest Coastal Highway and did some hiking on the various beaches and parks.

Hanalei Bay Area

Kauai is home to more sandy beaches than any other major island in the Hawaiian chain.

view from our mountain hike, Kalalau & Hanakapiai Trails

Kalalau trail stretches 12 miles along rugged Na Pali, while Hanakapiai Trail tracks along the first 4 miles of the Kalalau trail ending at Hanakapiai Beach.

One of the Views from our Hike, Ke'e Beach. Located literally at the end of the road, The famed Kalalau Trail begins at the western end of the beach. Several movies and min-series have been filmed here such as The Thorn Birds and Castaway Cowboys.

Another view from our mountain hike, The Na Pali Coast. It has been featured in many movies including Jurassic Park, King Kong, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. "Na Pali" means "The Cliffs" in Hawaiian.

Five Sisters Waterfalls

These photos of the five Sisters Waterfall were the only helicopter flight pictures I liked, or turned out good. I had the camera on Auto, but I should of had it on Action mode. Too much excitement was the only pitfall of having a whirlybird open door flight.

As the pilot went thru his flight routine, the ride reminded me of riding as the passenger of a motorcycle on a twisty road.
