With much of the Northern Hemisphere locked in the grips of winter, reading about motorcycles is about as close to riding as many of us will get. Here is a selection of books we'd recommend to keep the enthusiasm up in winter and give you some inspiration to just get out and ride.

    Wonderings:

    The eternal present.

I am beat. I spent the Wednesday putting the final touches on and then hosting an open house for my mothers 90th birthday. A trail of people came to wish her the best on her day and say an unspoken goodbye.

When only family remained after all others had left we shared a meal from McDonalds. Burgers and soda for my granddaughter; burger and Manhattans for the rest of us. Four generations sat there sharing reflections on the day and memories from the past. My sister and her husband are leaving for Florida on Friday. Earlier she and I discussed what outfit was set aside for mother to wear at the anticipated eventuality. We made no false promises to each other for some future meeting of the four generations that were sharing the meal.

I tickled my granddaughter as she tried to finish her meal. That bit of teasing garnered me a scolding from my mother. And that led to a hearty laugh from all at my expense. Then seemingly in an instant I was left alone as they all went their ways. As I cleaned up from the meal I notice that only my mother cleaned her plate. The rest of us left some morsel as if cleaning our plates somehow would stave off the eventuality.

That is in the future. For me there is only the present. In that present there are four generations at a meal and friends elsewhere to read my ramblings. It is a very good day.

BMW Group starts the new year with a slight increase
    02/07/2007

BMW brand increases by 3% in January+++
Positive outlook for the year for all brands+++

Munich. The BMW Group started the new year with a slight increase in sales of 0.5%. 94,276 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce cars were delivered to customers in January (prev.yr.: 93,835). Sales of the BMW brand increased by 3.0% to 80,629 (prev.yr.: 78,265) automobiles.

As scheduled, sales growth of BMW brand vehicles is set to become far more dynamic over the course of the year. The new BMW 3 Series convertible and the revised BMW 5 and BMW 1 Series models will be appearing on the market in March this year. After its launch last November in the USA, the BMW X5 will also be available in European markets from March 2007. The three-door BMW 1 Series, which is being offered in this variant for the first time, will be following in May.

MINI still below last year, due to model cycle factors

Production of the new generation of MINI at the Oxford plant is running at full speed. This vehicle - the world's most successful small car in the premium segment - has been available on European markets since November last year. At the moment, dealers in the overseas markets are also being supplied with the new MINI. In its largest market in terms of volume, the USA, MINI will thus only be launched in February. This means that MINI sales in January, at 13,622 automobiles delivered, are still 12.3% below the figure for the same month last year (15,540). For the year 2007 as a whole, the company is planning to break the sales record of 200,428 vehicles delivered in 2005.

In January this year, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars handed over 25 Phantoms to customers (prev.yr.: 30/-16.7%). The company is also planning for Rolls-Royce, as the most successful brand in the absolute luxury class, to outstrip its 2006 sales of 805 automobiles in the year 2007.

As of this summer, this plan will be supported by a convertible model, the
Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coup?, which was given an excellent reception when it made its world d?but at the Detroit Motor Show.

Dr. Michael Ganal, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing: "We have once again undertaken a good deal for 2007 - the company strives for new sales records for all three brands. In this way, we intend to confirm our position as the world's leading supplier of premium automobiles once again."

In the motorcycle segment, sales also developed satisfactorily at the start of the year. 4,152 units sold means that 5.1% more vehicles were delivered to customers than in the same month last year (3,950).

BMW Group sales in January 2007 at a glance
    In January 2007 comp. w. prev.yr.
    BMW Group Automobiles 94,276 +0.5%
    BMW 80,629 +3.0%
    MINI 13,622 -12.3%
    Rolls-Royce 25 -16.7%
    BMW Motorcycles 4,152 +5.1%

    Happy B-day Mom!

Your post on your mother's b-day gave me cause to reflect about my own mom, how it seems we put things off as if we have unlimited time, we'll get to it "eventually".

I guess the thread about Garth and now your Mom has me pondering my own mortality. That life is too short to procastinate. Don't wait. Do it now.

    Carpe Diem.

Best wishes to your Mom, M1ka.

    HDR will carry the day

Where does BMW rank in sales in Australia?

Honda continues to lead the market with an overall share in excess of 25%. Big Red sold 3065 more vehicles than arch rival and closest competitor Yamaha. Suzuki remains a very clear third place in the brand rankings a long way behind Yamaha, but with a very clear lead over fourth placed Kawasaki. Suzuki sold 14815 motorcycles in 2006 to Kawasaki’s 9491. WA based dirt specialists KTM maintain a slender advantage over Harley-Davidson to hold down fifth spot on the charts shipping 5930 of the Austrian machines from their vast Welshpool warehouse. British manufacturer Triumph took seventh place on the charts and the top ten were rounded out by ATV brand Polaris, scooter specialist Bolwell and budget road bike maker Hyosung. The only other brands to sell more than 1000 machines were Vmoto, Vespa, BMW, Bug and Ducati.

    How about Harley Davidson?

The cruiser category experienced great growth and Harley-Davidson rode the boom the best with six of the top ten selling models powered by the American icon. Honda’s long running VT750C took second overall behind Harley’s Softail while Yamaha’s XVS650 sold well to take third spot in the segment. None of the larger capacity cruiser offerings from Japan or Europe managed a top ten position.

Photographers - a must read. <- Check it out

Today's digital cameras match or slightly exceed the performance of silver halide film. Here is a sample from the article:

But researchers have already built HDR image "stitchers" which merge multiple images and automatically account for camera motion between snaps.

Technology can now equal B&W and color films. HDR is the future.
