    Feasting on Asphalt Marathon

Just in case you missed it the first time around, or just want to watch it again, Food Network is going to replay Alton Brown's "Feasting on Asphalt" series Saturday (1/20) starting at 8pm, Eastern. Stay up all night, or record it, since it is a marathon.

Sweet! Thanks John! I DID miss it the first time around, despite several direct Emails to me reminding me about the show! I thought I had the Tivo programmed to record it, but somehow botched it up. I know, I know, HOW do you screw up programming the Tivo?? I hacked it and upgraded it to dual 500GB drives at the time, I just forgot to reprogram it...

There are 4 episodes. Food TV Canada finally got around to showing it in October and then we had to endure them for 12 weeks. It was interesting and entertaining the first time around. I don't mind repeats but not so soon after the shows air originally.

    Eggscellent!

I have the dvr programmed. Now, will I remember to leave it powered up?

For me Alton strikes a fascinating blend of culinary discipline, chemistry and showmanship. He has assembled a production company that displays his talents wonderfully, I laugh while I learn which to me, is bnlliant. Thanks for the heads up!

    Peace!

I like Alton. A lot of the techniques that I currently use in my cooking are ones I learned from watching "Good Eats". Did a couple of steaks the other night using one of his methods --- toss cast iron skillet into oven. Turn oven on and let it pre-heat to 500 degrees. When the oven is ready, turn on a burner on top of the stove to high. Prep the steaks by coating very lightly in oil and the season with salt and pepper. Once the burner is to temperature, take skillet out of oven. Put skillet on burner. Sear the steaks on both sides for about 30 seconds per side. Put back on the first side and put the skillet and steaks into the oven. 3 minutes per side in the oven gives you a nice rare steak. 4 minutes gives you medium rare.

Oh so THAT'S where my brother got that from! I do roughly the same thing, except I just let the skillet heat to branding-iron-hot on top of the stove. Two things I've found though: One is that the oven-time really varies with the thickness of the steak. The other is that this procedure *REALLY* smokes up the apartment. I find it best to open both doors and set a fan in one of them while the broiler is preheating. This MIGHT prevent the very piercing smoke-alarm from sounding.

    Steaks

What you mention works well, but I prefer the charcoal grill with hickory wood chips, once you do it this way, you may never go back to the oven.

Hickory chips!?!?!?!?! Horse feathers!!!!! The ONLY way to BBQ a steak is with real mesquite wood. No charcol, no chips, just plain old dry mesquite!

Alton's going to saddle up again!!

In the latest issue of Rider (March 2007), they talk about the series that Alton and friends did (the one you're all talking about). They go on to say that there's another trip in the works, to be filmed in April and May on the left coast (yeah, that's all of us who are riding our bikes to work right now WITHOUT snow) from Mexico to Canada. They're talking about six show segments, not four and broadcast to be in August 2007.

Keep an eye out. If anyone can get their trip schedule, I'd love to know what it is. They've GOT TO be coming through here on the way North.
