Milwaukee's Pabst Brewing Facility

The Pabst Complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 2003.

The sun is setting on the
Milwaukee's Pabst Brewing Facility

Pabst Blue Ribbon, colloquially known as PBR, is the most famous product of the Pabst Brewing Company. The top beers (sales - U.S.) in 1970 were 1) Budweiser, followed by Pabst Blue Ribbon, Schlitz, and Miller High Life. By the 80's, the market had been totally re-invented due to the advent of "Lite" beer by Miller and subsequent light beer additions by other brewers.

Pabst Brewery Complex in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the former brewery of the Pabst Brewing Company. The facility was closed in 1997. On August 16, 2006 the brewery complex was purchased by Joseph Zilber's investment group Brewery Project LLC for $13 million to create The Brewery, a renovated complex for residential, office, and retail use.

ÔÇ£The Beer That Made Milwaukee FamousÔÇØ
"When you're out of Schlitz, you're out of beer!"
ÔÇ£Real GustoÔÇØ

By the 1950s, Schlitz was the nation's largest brewer, with additional breweries outside Wisconsin. The company flourished through the 1970s, being ranked as the No. 2 brewery in America as late as 1976.

In 1967, Schlitz patented a process that accelerated fermentation, according to the book "Breweries of Wisconsin" by Jerry Apps. That was followed by apparent changes in ingredients, including a different type of barley and the use of corn instead of barley. Drinkers noticed and turned away. "That stuff was undrinkable in the '70s," "It had a very pronounced chemical taste."

Pabst, who owns Schlitz has recently announced that they are bringing back the original 1960's formula.

I really never noticed this triangle shaped building, until a movie crew starring Johnny Depp came to Wisconsin to film part a movie inside this building.

This street car was brought up from Chicago. The prop crew also laid street car rails and cobblestone for the street scene.

The film crew installed this contour billboard to cover-up the south end of Main Street. The bill board looks like concrete, but is made of plywood, then sprayed dry wall cement on it's surface. The sign looks very pretty, till it was sprayed with dirt to look like it would in Depression era Chicago.

In April 1927, the First National Bank building, located in Oshkosh at Main and Washington opened. This was the third building constructed on this site. It was an eight-story, bank and office building that cost $550,000.

North Main Street/Algoma Boulevard/Market Street will be Sioux Falls, S.D., where John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson robbed the Security National Bank and Trust Co. on March 6, 1934.

The making of the movie Public Enemies was an eye opening experience for me. It was cool to see the movie company putting up props and getting ready to shot the movie. I was under the wrong impression that much of the movie was made on a computer. The above photo was taken across from the bank that John Dillinger robbed in the movie. The workers are installing a panel with charges set to simulate bullet explosions.

Note the life like machine gun holes. I also notices some red blood capsules on a building next door.

The Public Enemies movie set was set in a "T" form. This photo is taken with the large billboard to my back, with the Soup kitchen and Homes barbershop to the left. To the right in the picture is the 8 story Bank and down that street is the Oshkosh Public Library.

Down this street, and right across from the Library, the movie company set up a large "background screen" for editing
