Tour: Green Bay Heritage Tour

Most Stagecoach routes are as straight and stop at as many towns as possible, and the Milwaukee to Green Bay Historical Trail is no exception. It travels north/south about 10 miles east of West Bend. I have never taken the whole ride, but I have taken pictures at various spots.

In 1803-1860 the lands lying between the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers and encompassing the present states of Ohio, upper and lower Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and parts Minnesota were called the Northwest Territory.

In 1849, President Zachary Taylor released some of these lands, thereby making them available for purchase for homesteads. Some of these lands were documented as purchased as early as 1847, although the State of Wisconsin was not officially formed until 1848,

A good place to start the Ride is west of Cedarburg in Hamilton.

Howards Grove Meat Market has been in continuous operation for more than 100 years, with only four owners. The Market makes German Style Products.:german

This Meat Market is excellent, but too pricey for me, I get my bulk custom meat from Bernie's Meat Market in downtown Port Washington. http://www.berniesfinemeats.com/shop/

Tour: Horicon Marsh, the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States

Horicon National Wildlife Refuse Area.

The best place to access (and cross) the north end of the Parkway is Highway 49 as it cross the Marsh is State Highway 49, exit off of Hwy 41, and head west towards Waupun. Several scenic overlooks around the marsh allow you to view the marsh's different highlights, including the birds and animals that reside there. Follow the brown signs for the Horicon Marsh Parkway, an estimated 50-mile auto tour that encircles the Horicon Marsh, and follows state and county highways through Burnett, Kekoskee, Horicon, Mayville and Waupun.

The auto tour provides access to facilities and sites in and around the Horicon Marsh, including Horicon Department of Natural Resources Service Center on Highway 28 north of Horicon (920-387-7860) and Horicon National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center located on the northeast side of the Marsh on County Trunk Z (920-387-2658).

The Parkway is easily accessible from West Bend by following State Highway 33 to access the south end of the Parkway.

Overlooking two river systems, the Oconomowoc on the east and the Little Oconomowoc to its west. Both rivers are connected to a major grouping of lakes just south of the Washington County line. The whole area is filled with woods and marshes. Directly to the east of Holy Hill lies Glacier Hills County Park.

The slow growth experienced by the village has resulted in remarkably well preserved buildings dating back to the 1850's. Thirty-four of the commercial buildings in the downtown have been named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Tour: Fishing & Friday Night Fish Frys

West Bend is 20 miles from Lake Michigan and one of the best places in the world to go fishing. Port Washington, Sheboygan, Two Rivers & Manitowoc have great fleets of charter boats. Remember to make your reservations early, as they are always booked for mid-summer. You can charter a boat for half or whole days.

Tour: Two Wheeled Tuesday/ Milwaukee

Every Tuesday April thru October, a few hundred motorcycles gather in the parking lot behind Culvers Drive-in at 124 Street, two blocks south of Capital Drive. Take Highway 45 Capital Drive west(Harley Plant exit). Bikes start arriving at 5 PM, leaving at sunset. REI Camping store is straight ahead on Capital Drive.

It would be great to have a large BMW crowd the Tuesday of the National Rally.

Slimey Crud/Pine Bluff/Leland

First Sunday of May & October
Just West of Madison Wisconsin
Slimey Crud Run :bikes

One of Wisconsin big Sport Bike Events is the Slimey Crud Run. The Event starts about 10 miles west of Madison in Pine Bluff and ends 40 miles northwest in Leland, but you have to remember about the Pine Bluff/Leland route, is that you can't get there from here. Everyone takes a different road, and the Bikers all leave and arrive when they feel.

Do your own Slimey Crud Run while at the National Rally. Pine Bluff (95 miles, 2 hours from West Bend) has some of the best twistys around.
