    Alaska

In January when Sharon decided she was going to run the Anchorage Marathon in June I thought it would be a great opportunity to rent a BMW in Alaska and ride around for a week. All of the BMW rental companies were booked up. So I posted and enquiry on ADVrider if anyone knew of any other sources. Steve Sanchez (Steve-O) also an MOA member repsonded to me and said I could use his 1987 K100LT. "Just give me some money for tires and an oil change." Motorcycling Alaska was now on!

    Day 1 & 2 - Anchorage

We arrived in Anchorage and I was immediately attacked by a Grizzly Bear..

    Day 3 - Anchorage

Sharon finished her marathon in 7 hours 22 minutes with one sore knee and 3 big blisters. She raised over $5000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Day 4 - Anchorage to Denali

Bigfoot and Hal escorted us out of Anchor town northwards towards Denali...
You meet the nicest people thru the MOA!

A stop in Talkeetna for a icy coffee drink. This is the town that the TV show "Northern Exposure" was modelled after...

On the way to Cantwell... The K100LT was running fine.

2 nights at the Perch Resort near Denali. Recommended by ian408. Great food and a nice little cabin on the river!

We had our fair share of king crab.

    Day 5 - Denali

In the morning we took a 6 hour shuttle bus tour of Denali National Park all the way to Toklat. We saw Dall sheep, caribou, dust, Mt. McKinley behind some clouds and no bears whatsoever.

Day 6 - Denali to to Eureka Lodge (Glenn Hwy - mile 128)

A new building near the University of Alaska Fairbanks..

A Bombardier SkiDoo with a Kohler engine in the Mushing Museum, Fairbanks.. That will keep you warm.

Rode thru the North Pole and sent some postcards to friends. It was about 78F.

You got to just love fur! Delta Junction, AK.

South of Delta Junction we came across the Alaskan Pipeline...

A female moose. The only moose I saw. Sharon saw 6 moose throughout the trip. My eyes were on the road.

Summit Lake was like glass. It was a photographer's wet dream. We both agreed that this was the most beautiful spot on the whole trip.

Arrived at the Eureka Lodge after a 13 hour day. The owner said don't go out back tonight... a grizz ate a calf last night.

Day 7 - Eureka Lodge to Seward

We found the Yukon Bar and karaoke night.. The Ring of Fire.. The Ring of Fire!

    Hangover to follow.

Day 8 - Seward - Fiords 6 hour boat tour.

Hangovers and boat rides on rough water don't mix. Sharon and I were both sick.

The glacier was spectacular! Popping and cracking and parts falling off of it. Photo of it calving...

This tour was well worth the price.
We saw Stellar Sea Lions, Humpback whales, Puffins, porpises, Orcas (killer whales)..

Day 9 - Seward to Homer to Anchorage.

    Skinned Halibut.

    Homer docks.

The famous Salty Dawg Saloon on the Spit in Homer. We had cokes this time.

Day 10 - Anchorage to SFO.

    Sick Sink Pic.

    Burnzilla,

You are very very lucky there's no corn in that soup because the Alaska Fish and Game would fine you for illegal chumming. Yessir, it looks like frenchfries and catsup to me. One other thing, did you eat the bubbles or did they manifest later during the distilling process.

Seriously though, I'm glad you and Sharon had a safe and fun trip. It was great to meet you. Hopefully, we'll see ya on the road sometime again.
