R1100S Clip-On Height Adjustment?

Problem:

I have a 2000 R1100S, and would like to raise the handgrips for longer trips, but am too cheap to buy the aftermarket bar-risers. I've heard that the clip-ons can be moved from under the triple-clamp to on top, thus raising the grips about an inch.

First, is that safe/mechanically sound? Seems like the bars couldn't stand as much torque in that position. Second, is there another problem that I don't see coming?

Or, am I better off ripping the wallet out of my grubby hands and ordering the risers?

Thanks in advance!

yep, it's been done, HERE is a lot of detail involving moving low bars above the tripple clamp and also adding bar backs. should answer a lot of your questions
