Phil, I hate to be a big pain in the ass, but chrome is correct for later bikes, polished aluminum is correct for the /5. No one will know if you lightly rub the chrome with oooo steel wool. If I had a perfect pair, I would give them to you.

You are right they did come with polished aluminum on the /5. I still like the way the chrome ones look. Your not a big pain. I appreciate you looking at my project. My problem is (to be honest) it looks so nice I just sit in the garage and stare at it. Bob_M I agree with you about the first rock chip...

Final pic..Until my next rebuild. Thats everyone for looking.

Period bags were the $35 leather bags with chrome brackets. I used to soak them in neetsfoot oil and leave them out in the sun for a day. After a few years they got kind of lumpy looking but by then the Krausers with the seat belt fasteners came out. The bags that are on your /5 came out in about '78? I think. They used to split the abs just under the latches by the rivets. Some think it happened during the cold winters if left in the garage. Just before that there were some Denfeld bags that were rectangular boxes too. They didn't last long splitting the abs along the rivets everywhere.
Your's is a beautiful looking bike. I had a 71 and a 73, but traded the toaster tank for a 6 gallon one.

Saturday night at a local bike show I decided to enter my /5. I didnt think I would win with all those 50 grand Harleys in the parking lot. I guess they liked it. I won first place. The next morning I brought the trophy over to the builders house and gave it to him. I was the only BMW in the show. I was surprised at how many Harley owners liked the bike.

Congratulations! A trophy well deserved. . . . Nice gesture to give it to the builder, too. Well done.
