My wife does not ride but likes to know if I'm alright and where I am. Is there an Android App that I can put on our phones that will track me or for that matter each other? I've looked at Satellite trackers but they offer way more than I need. I've loaded a few and they seem geared to kids. I just want a a map with a moving dot. I like simple!

My apologies if there is an obvious solution I've over looked.

See you at the rally, I hope!

One of these might be what you are looking for.

Pretty sure you can do it through Maps. Also-some text message apps also have a location feature i.e. share for "x" amount of time.

My recommendation would be to get Bubbler GPS for your Android phones, then set up an account (at very minimal cost) at Spotwalla.com (https://new.spotwalla.com). Info at https://new.spotwalla.com/help will help you get set up. This will give you good tracking wherever you have cell service as well as mapping whose links can be shared with friends and family, like this one. I’ve used Spotwalla for years in conjunction with a SPOT and iPhone (which uses the SWTracker app for iOS).

Best,
DeVern

I prefer stand-alone emergency gear. Apps, connectivity, cell service are all links in a chain that can be stretched or broken. I suppose the ultimate would be a satellite phone but may be more than you need.

Some light reading on EPIRBS- https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/emergency-position-indicating-radiobeacon . And the hows and why’s a satellite device is considered top of the line in an emergency.

Here is a thread that my help you- https://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?73454-SPOT-for-rescue

If it’s time or near time for new cell phones, Apple iPhones can do this in real time providing there is cell service using the “Find my Friends” app.

Great that your wife is concerned. :thumb

Life360 works well so long as you have a cell signal.

We have this and it works good on our Android phones. The free basic plan is simple.
The only problem I have is Debbie rarely has her phone on :)

For those with iOS phones, you can grant location access to folks you know and allow them to find you. It doesn't work outside of cell coverage, but where you do have cell service it will readily and happily show your position in real time.

Apple phones and watches also will detect auto accidents and will attempt to ask you if you're alright. If you don't respond, it will attempt to call 911 for you.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT2...e car crash, phone can call emergency services.

If you have an iPhone14, it has integrated satellite communications for emergencies, though it's not as automated as the function above: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT213426

Back to your regularly scheduled Android discussion. I hope that's helpful if someone is considering satellite services or emergency notifications. It might be an alternative worth considering for some.

Yep, with Maps you can share your location with others that have a Google account and they can share their location with you via the Maps app or website. You do have to have locations services enabled on your phone. My sister and I are using this service for the same use as the OP. If you're in a location without a cell connection, it will show them the last location that it knows and how long is been since they were there.

Assuming the OP has an Android phone, I'd recommend he try this since it's already most likely on his phone, plus it's free! Well, as free as anything Google but that's another discussion.

Spotwalla is great. You'll need Bubbler for Android phones, as DeVern says. I have an iPhone so I use SWTracker and Spotwalla. My wife can track my whereabouts in real time. I can insert pictures and messages at any point along my route. Also, Spotwalla is a must (IMHO) for certified IBA rides.

I just want a a map with a moving dot. I like simple!

Spotwalla provides what you want - a map with a moving dot. You can add pictures and messages to the map as you traverse the country. Simple? There is a learning curve to Spotwalla/Bubbler, but many helpful videos, etc., to assist with the process. I am "technology-challenged" so I had to force myself to learn Spotwalla. I practiced using it on short rides until I understood the process. But, as I mentioned in a previous post, it is required for specific IBA rides. I recommend it for all IBA rides; it makes the certification process so easy.

Life 360 shows a moving dot on the map and the onscreen text will say if you're moving or stopped. It will also display the closest address. When you stop it will say how long you've been stopped.
Those features are free.
If you pay there's more features but I just do the free app.

Here's a screenshot of Life 360

Life 360 works for those that want to use it. My kids have found ways to jam it up.....

Of course. In simpler times we learned to disconnect the speedo cable on dad's or mom's car so how much we were driving around and up and down the "strip" wasn't obvious. :uhoh Life is harder now. :)

Myself and several family members just share our location using google maps location sharing. Works great while on a trip with wife the father in law can watch our dots move about and doesn't need to be updated. Makes others feel like they are traveling with us. I like that location can be seen from anything running google maps unlike apple location sharing that can only be done with apple devices.

Technology challenged also. This would be a great seminar subject to have at a rally. I ride solo and would like to be found if ending up in the pucker brush.

Good reason to have SPOT, Inreach, etc., satellite tracking systems. Can send SOS with precise location, if needed. Spotwalla works with many of the satellite systems.
I use SWTracker which requires cell phone signal. Out here in Nowhere, New Mexico, there are vast areas with no cell phone coverage. My Saturday ride was 357 miles round trip. Spotwalla can magically piece together my route. But there were long stretches with no cell phone signal: https://new.spotwalla.com/trip/104a-1d436af1-f489/view.
