Is a 1200RT a good idea for a sidecar rig?

Have seen a 2009 (?) R1200RT with a 2 person sidecar for sale. Is this really a workable set-up or is the RT not suitable as a tug?
Usually see K bikes or GS bikes when it's a BMW.

The RT is used as a tug for many sidecars.

The RT is a fine tug. GS bikes make popular tugs due to their off-pavement capabilities and their lack of bodywork complicating installation and maintenance, the latter factor also accounting for the popularity of a lot of unfaired bikes as tugs. Brick-K bikes make great tugs, here in the US at least, in part because maintenance items like valve checks, FI and ignition checks or repairs are all on the left side and easily accessible with the car installed. And all of these bikes have sufficient HP and torque to handle a sidecar, so pick the flavor you prefer and run with it!

I will make a semi-informed comment which sidecar experts may correct if I am wrong: but, the final drive gearing of GS bikes is normally lower than RT bikes and the lower gearing would usually be beneficial with a sidecar. So maybe a final drive gearing swap would be beneficial.

Boxers are good for sidecars

I have a 2018 R1200 GS with a Hanigan sidecar. It is a load of fun. I did replace the front end with the LBS Leading Link for easier steering. I have owned RTs (2003 and 2007) without sidecar and really liked the weather protection except in hot temperatures.

If it’s set up correctly and matched to the right sidecar, an RT makes a good tug for a hack.
