    Hello!

After years of riding sport/sport-touring bikes, my wife and I have decided to get adventure bikes. We plan to pick up our F 750s soon, though it will be a bit before we get a chance to ride them.

Your name wouldn't happen to be Jon Johnson, would it?

Sorry... been waiting years to do that one!

There is a lot of good adventure riding up your way... and the GS Giants are a great way to start meeting a lot of them.

Welcome here... Let the farkling begin!

Welcome to the MOA Forum and the growing off-road contingent, ANKY!

You’re joining a big national organization. As president of the ALaBeemers, you might consider joining one of several Wisconsin clubs too. Check out this list of various BMW clubs: >> https://www.bmwmoa.org/page/charteredclubs <<

Down here in the Tenn River valley, our daffodils are starting to actually bloom. Hope warmer temps arrive in your Zip-code real soon...

You know, Johnson is a pretty common last name around here, but I don't know of any named John!

I've already started looking at what we'll be adding to the bikes to get them set up for touring:
    • Crash Bars/Engine Guards
    • Tank bags
    • Luggage
    • Windshield?

Luggage is probably the toughest decision right now; previously I've had hard saddlebags on my bikes, and my wife had soft saddlebags, and then we used soft bags and duffel bags and such on the seat/luggage racks. However, we had rental bikes for a trip last year that had hard top cases, and they were pretty convenient, so I'm a bit torn on that. Right now, thinking about the Givi Trekker luggage.

Since you're both riding one-up the best place for what's normally stored in a top box is over the pillion position. Better centralization of weight like this also makes a lot of difference when riding rougher off-pavement. I like tank panniers for the same reason.

I tested Mosko Moto panniers years ago, and they have continued to improve. See crash testing below. Giant Loop & Wolfman have some decent gear, too. Hard bags are probably preferable if the majority of your riding is paved. This is all imo.

Another approach, also from a while back....

The lower center of gravity is one of the things I was thinking about. I suppose another question here is about what's "normally" stored in a top box.

On previous trips with my FJR, I had a large seat bag that I would use, and that would usually get large items like camping gear (backpacking tent, stove, cooking gear, etc). Smaller items that we would need to get at frequently during the trip (snacks, water, maps, raingear, gloves, etc) would end up split up among our tank bags and the soft rear bag. On our trip last year, the top cases came in handy for those items, and gave us a place to stash our helmets when we were off the bikes sight-seeing.

Yes indeed; and they’ll evolve over time as well. Hard luggage can hold more STICKERS!

Mrs-HSV loves having a top box, while I’ve never appreciated always having one mounted (like on the ole LT).
It’s great to have the easy-on & easy off edition.

Additionally, your wife’s opinion will certainly be different from yours [But Not Wrong!].
Mrs-HSV always rides around town w/o her sidebags relying on the locking top box...

It’s a blank page, you both get to develop your own stories (until you trade up for something different!).
And don’t overlook a tire repair kit and the plug-in tire pump, cause eventually you’ll need it...

As requested, here's a pic of the bikes after we picked them up.

Not the best pic, but it was quite dark by the time we got back from picking them up.

Hopefully spring arrives soon so we can start riding. It was quite a bit warmer down where we picked the bikes up, and when we went to leave the dealership I felt like we should have been heading further south instead of heading home. Now that the bikes are officially ours, it is time to start getting them set up for touring!

Congratulations! I’m guessing you’ll both enjoy them tremendously!

If necessary, a little professional training/coaching is always a Good Investment.
They ‘could’ teach U new concepts and to unlearn certain bad habits.
Our dealers up in MD/VA would both offer day-long off-road training in the Spring on private property. Just depends on the opportunities & dealers near you...

Dig into the Forum for past postings on training accomplished and enjoyed.
Do Not Overlook this MOA Scholarship offer:

That $$ for Training pays U back for your MOA Membership!
