Rider Magazine Article About Riding Alone Off-Road

The main reason I chose a BMW motorcycle is that nearly all of my tours involved remote unpaved roads, on my own. Up until my first BMW I had been riding all manner of unreliable European enduro bikes for greater distances and I was tired of worrying about breakdowns.

Over the years, as somewhat of an early dual-sport evangelist, I came to learn that there is a *significant* fear of riding alone, especially in what today is called the ADVriding community. In addition to technical problems, falling down, getting stuck or hurt are also on your mind.

One of the most successful parts of the GS Giants event at our national rally was the 2-day adventure ride, together to the rally. This created a great sense of security for people without being too geeky about it, n00bs could learn from old hands, and a side benefit was that lifelong friendships were quickly made.

The Backcountry Discovery Routes offer a similar level of comfort. Personally, I enjoy a greater degree of adventure, more unknowns… and there are so many fantastic rides one can find on their GPS or phone… to me, this type of riding adds so much to the experience. Riding 100% off pavement between two lines on a map holds zero interest.

The one thing I’ve learned that the article doesn’t mention… never ride down something that you can’t ride back up! :ha

This is what turned me on to BMWs… besides riding off-road, I will never forget one of those bikes passing me on the road at over 100mph!
