Beartooth Pass remains closed on the Montana side due to severe flooding and resulting mud slides. Tentatively, Montana dot plans for having it open in late July. The pass is open from the Wyoming side, via the Chief Joseph Byway, as far as slightly beyond the WY / MT border.

Brother-in-law and his wife just visited there in a borrowed RV.

Campground was $200/night!

Apparently I've lost touch with prices outside of my bubble.

What do the locals consider the best month to ride these areas?

Late in the summer they will drop the reservation requirement, or at least they did last year. In general, the best time to visit the parks is while schools are in session, so mid/September.
