Silly question for a local, but what's the weather typically like in NC that time of year? Would I need the mummy sleeping bags rated at 0C or something lighter?

It’s very comfortable, I would bring a light bag.

Elevation is important… our valley (and the rally site’s valley) are at 2800’… our house is at 4000’… and the difference in temp is quite noticeable.

Rain can happen, especially if a hurricane is around.

Thanks I have a niece who lives in Lexington which is about 1/2 way point if I go to the rally this could make it easy for me to plan my route
 
Check out this nice local area guide for attractions and rides around the rally.

You can download GPX files for each of the roads shown in the image below... and trust me, there are a lot more "locals-only" roads to explore. :evil

A group of us from Florida will be staying at the Oak Park Inn. It’s an old-school tourist court, much smaller but somewhat similar to the Best Western in Springfield. Downtown shops and eateries are all within walking distance. There’s even a killer bakery right on the property (Kandi’s). The rally is actually in Lake Junaluska. There’s a quick, little traffic backway to the site via 276 and Raccoon Road.

Try tapping on the light blue sentence. It’s sometimes hard to distinguish that it is actually a link (embedded).

FWIW, Basecamp "encountered an unexpected error" while loading these gpx tracks. (What errors were expected?)

Gpsvisualizer.com accepted them and converted them to .gpx files that Basecamp could handle.

Which ones... the maps at RideWithGPS.com or the BMW RA rally info site?

The RA info site is on the esri GIS platform... I dunno, but you would think it'd give you a valid GPX. I will check it out when I get a chance.
