Average Fuel Mileage On F850GS

What are you getting for average fuel mileage per tank on your F850GS. Riding to Deadhorse AK and trying to figure how much fuel to carry with me.

I get in the low 50s with typical two-lane rural riding. My 850GS is equipped with a Madstad windsheld, Givi Outback Trekker bags and Dunlop Trailmax Mission tires - all of which I'm sure impact mileage.

The Dalton Highway has 245 mile stretch without fuel. Most 5-gallon tank bikes will not make this if the rider is going over 60 m.p.h. Therefore, bring a small, two-gallon fuel container and strap it to you bike for your ride north out of Fairbanks. You won't use it until Coldfoot, but you will be glad you brought it!

You can pick up a chainsaw fuel can at the lumberyard in Watson Lake. That has two separate compartments, 2L and 4L, as the original intent is to carry both fuel and oil for the saw. That lets you select how much extra fuel to carry in a non-sloshing manner.

I used one going up the Dempster to Inuvik and Tuk and on the way home from Fairbanks I stopped at a Yamaha shop on the east end of Whitehorse for a fresh Mitas. They were really good about providing a shaded spot for me to pull the wheel and got me out in a hurry, so I donated my can to them with instructions to pass it along to a northbound someone who’d need it as I knew I’d not need it on the Cassiar or the way home.

Though technically the speed limit on the Dalton is 50mph, I agree on having some spare fuel, even if it's just for cheap insurance.
