A Comparison of Bar End Weights

Neglected Bike Adopter
For anyone who's researching this like I was a few months ago, I hope this is helpful. I wasn't able to actually find this info anywhere other than some very old forum threads without pictures and figured I'd document it myself.

The three bar-ends I have on hand are: the stock steel weight from my 1997 R850R, a used brass weight from an R1100S, and an HVMP "heavy" stainless steel bar-end weight. The stock weight is 252 grams, the weight from the R1100S is 412 grams, and the HVMP is 401 grams. HVMP says that the one I have is the heaviest they offer for my bike.

I have had all three installed over the last few months and the effect with the R1100S weights and the HVMP weights is about the same; both are noticeably better at reducing vibration than the stock weights.

It is also important to note that the R1100S weights do not fit my bike correctly and they leave a significant gap between the end of the grips and the start of the weights. The counterbore at the handlebar end is not deep enough to sit correctly even though they do mount without issue. I had ordered them as a temporary measure until I could get hold of the HVMP set.

I managed to get hold of a Throttlemeister set from a 1996 RT which I have now mounted on my own 1996 RT, but before I did I put them on the scale for anyone who's curious. I was surprised to find that they weigh less than the stock weights. On this particular pair the throttle side is scratched up a bit so it may be missing a gram or two of steel.

Clutch side Throttlemeister weight with no mechanism: 238g.
Throttle side with the throttle lock mechanism (slightly damaged): 222g.

Weight when mounted is, of course, increased with stainless bolts by about 15g per weight.

Now that I have a lathe, I'm thinking about making my own pair of weights with a throttle lock that are heavier than the Throttlemeisters. Will update if I ever get around to doing that.
