NZ ideas?

the Wizard of Oz
Friends, it's a long story but I've been working in Australia for the past year, and in March 0f '22, we travel to New Zealand. I'll have a 7 week hiatus and tho I don't have any of my riding gear with me, I wonder if there isn't a "semi-affordable" way to go riding. I've had a reply from the NZ BMW club and a couple email addresses to write to, but no real leads yet. I'm pretty sure Moto Quest, one of the outfits I'd been in touch with a coupe years ago, still isn't riding in NZ due to the pandemic. I imagine others are similarly restricted.

IK there's super bikes near Canberra second week of March.

ideas welcome!! TYIA!

Ride safe, mates!

Wonderful Riding in NZ

Many years ago, back in 2001, Mary and I rented a BMW GS from Te Waiponamu in Christchurch for several weeks' riding on the South Island. We had a fantastic time, and the business treated us very well.

This is an old data point, but — at least back then — the business did an excellent job. Were I going back to NZ to ride, I'd knock on their door.

There are a few good guys from NZ I know on ADV. I've been thinking about moving there after my mother leaves us.

The ON has an ad from Adventure New Zealand Motorcycle Tours. I think they have been advertising for quite some time. I believe they also gave seminars at the National rallies and I never did win a tour to NZ...although I tried many times!

Thanx, I've got their website!

I'm loving it here. probably back in the US mid '23, but I think I'd stay if I could. Lovely people...in dire need of better pizza.

Link are they open to yanks?

Cool idea as I enjoyed an Australia and North island trip years ago by car. Did not mind the other side of the road much. LOL, Are they letting yanks in yet?

I came for work just over a year ago, so I guess if one quarantines for two weeks in an official q'tine hotel and is vaxx'd, you're good-to-go. Bc of this new variant, our plans for NZ may get altered a bit, but I'll still have time in June, tho that's winter here. We'll even get to Tassie eventually. Quite an adventure, even tho most of it won't be on 2 wheels.

I am amused by the fact that anyone from the land of the free would want to go to the socialist land of the lockdown.

Keep in mind on the So Island of NZ, even in the height of summer, the weather can and likely will be rat****. It can snow on the Peaks anytime, during the summer and relentlessly rain like hell.

Ask me how I know this.

I spent Dec-March there a few years back.
We had 2 sunny weeks in 4 months.
The drowned rat tour we called it.

Met a guy a few weeks back who did NZ bike tours and he gave us his card. I got the feeling while he was still waiting for the borders to open he was keen to do tours for people who could get here (and the border with Australia opened yesterday)

Good luck and hope you still make it over.

New Zealand

Tire-gripping road surfaces, glaciers, volcanoes and palm trees!
New Zealand, also known as the “Paradise Down Under”, offers everything you could possibly look for in a holiday destination: mountains and glaciers, wild coasts and long sandy beaches, a rainforest and hot springs. It is home to an interesting indigenous culture and to the friendliest people you can imagine. New Zealand is heaven for motorcyclists, because the roads are beautiful, well-maintained, and mostly empty.

This motorcycle tour will introduce you to all the major highlights of New Zealand: the Sky Tower in Auckland, the hot springs in Rotorua, the Art Deco district in Napier, museums, the most beautiful corners in Wellington, the ferry-cruise across Cook Strait, the spectacular Queen Charlotte Drive, the wild West Coast, the rainforest and the glaciers which run through it, the amazingly beautiful Milford Sound and the breath-taking view to Mount Cook, New Zealand‘s highest mountain.

You want to stay longer? The tour extension starting in Auckland will take you further North up to Cape Reinga and from there back to Auckland.

New Zealand Unpaved UNZ

Authentic New Zealand away from the asphalt roads!
The tarmac roads in New Zealand are already blessed with very little traffic, but the gravel roads there are usually completely deserted. On this tour, you can experience all the major highlights of New Zealand as well as many hidden treasures and unknown corners.

From Christchurch, we make our way over numerous dirt roads and passes in the direction of Queenstown. On the rest day, you can relax, participate in some extreme sports activity, or embark on an adventurous off-road motorcycle tour. Afterwards, we head over to the wild West Coast, through untouched rainforest, past crystal-clear lakes and with frequent forays to interesting and challenging trails. We cross the Cook Strait to the North Island by ferry, to Wellington, where we spend our second rest day.

Between motorcycle riding, sightseeing, and the unique food scene, Wellington really does appeal to everyone. Afterwards, we visit the Art Deco city of Napier, discover the snow-covered volcanoes of Tongariro and cross the jungle of the Te Urewera National Parks. We enjoy the countless curves of the Forgotten World Highway and then descend into the caves of Waitomo to see the indigenous New Zealand glowworm. Before the tour ends in Auckland, we ride around the Coromandel peninsula, known as “New Zealand in a nutshell”. Beautiful beaches, countless curves, fresh seafood; it’s pure delight. It won‘t be easy for you to say goodbye to this paradise on the other side of the world.
