I think some of this can be explained by looking at the US dollar to Mark historical conversion rate. In 1970 it was $1:3.65DB but from 1990 through 1996 it was about $1:1.62DM on average. You can do the math, but that means that without taking into inflation in to consideration, just the weakening of the purchasing power of the US dollar would make a 1990's BMW about 2.25 times more expensive in the US than in 1970.
