2005 R 1200 GS driveshaft failure

morning all, I was riding my GS on Tuesday when I felt an unusual vibration, pulled over to look. the smoke coming from the front driveshaft boot told me the shaft was done. and I only have 182,544 miles. I am considering a new shaft, my friend says I can loosen the boot pry the shaft off and remove it with the swingarm in place, is that correct? really wanted to ride this bike 200,000 miles ( the goal I set in 2006 when I took delivery, with 5 miles on the clock)
 
You will need to pivot the rear drive down and then you can pull the drive shaft out the back of the swing arm. You will need to pull the front boot back and pry the front u-joint back a little. It’s held held in place with a captive ring that needs to slide out of a groove on the trans. You can have the shaft rebuilt by a shop in Green Bay if the trunnions are still good. IF you are replacing the shaft be sure to get the correct part as I think a different spline pattern was used on later years.

If your driveshaft can be rebuilt, many owners have had good luck with Machine Service, Inc. in Green Bay, WI. Contact person there is Mitch. By the way, impressive mileage on your GS!

thanks to all. I pulled the shaft yesterday, pretty easy. I have a new shaft from ted porter on the way, hopefully it goes back in as easy as it came out.
 
morning all, I called Ted Porter at 17:30 Monday ordered a driveshaft, at 13:15 Wednesday it was in my hand. I installed it ( a little fiddley, it took 4 hands and a screwdriver) and rode to Portland ( a 3 hour ride), got there a little before 18:00. bike felt great. back on my quest for 200,000 miles
