EBC FA171 pads too big?

RANBUSH

Ran Bush
I went to change brake pads yesterday on a new-to-me '89 R100RT. I bought EBC FA171 pads and SS lines from Tom Cutter. Tried to install the EBCs and they won't fit, too long on the long axis to fit into the caliper. Holding an EBC pad up to the old pad that was in the bike (unreadable logo & info on the old pads), shows the EBC longer (wider) by about 1/8th inch.

I've used EBC pads on my '94 K75S and and '83 R100RS. The EBC FA171 is listed as being the correct pad on Bob's BMW website. I'm pretty sure Tom knows what he's doing. :)

Any ideas?

Well, the EBC site also shows the FA171 for your bike. It does also list an FA171V for a specialty application.

But you said the key thing...Tom should know this stuff inside/out. I'd check with him. I searched the forum and don't see anyone mentioning FA171 for an Airhead.

Yah Kurt, I finallly did what I should've done before I started grinding the backing plate; I emailed Tom and sent him the VIN and he ID'd my bike as an '88, produced in 9/87 and not an '89 as I had thought. And he sent me Brembo BP025 pads which oughta fit. Tom said, "BMW changed the calipers in 08/1988." and the FA171 pads will fit on the '89 bikes.

Note to self; always check the VIN before ordering parts.
