Brake Fluid Flush/Change 2008 1200GSA with ABS

Hey Everyone,

Questions about brake fluid flush/change on a 2008 1200GSA with ABS.

The brake fluid on my bike is similar in color to iced tea and probably should have been changed out a while ago. I bought the bike used a couple years ago and have no idea if or when it was last changed out.

That lead me to the tech library to do some research. I was reading the attached post below and it makes no mention as to whether or not the bike used in the tech thread has an ABS system. But according to my Haynes manual, if the bike has an ABS system, the brake fluid change should be performed by a BMW mechanic. I'm more than capable of performing the flush, but not sure what the consequences are relating to the ABS system.

So... questions....

  • Would it be harmful to do the flush/change even though my bike has ABS ?
  • Or... should I follow the Haynes manual recommendations and have the dealer do it ? (I'm sure a small fortune would be paid out).

Thanks!
Dave

ABS was standard on the bike in the link, and yours. The procedure for a 2007 bike or later with ABS is the same as a non-ABS bike.

Earlier Hexheads used a servo ABS system that required additional steps.
