[B]Melandri achieves BMW Motorrad's best ever result[/B]

It was a fantastic start to the 2012 Superbike World Championship for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team, as new recruit Marco Melandri posted the best result to date for the factory Superbike squad, with a second place finish in race one.

Having qualified only 13th on the grid, due to the cancelled superpole and the missed chance to challenge for a higher grid position, Melandri rode a near perfect race, moving his way confidently through the pack and passing rivals such as Jonathan Rea and Jakub Smrz in the early stages of the race. In front of him the circuit lap record was being smashed by Max Biaggi in pursuit of current champion Carlos Checa, who then crashed out of contention while leading the race.

By half race distance, the impressive Italian was up to fourth place and chasing down Sylvain Guintoli and Tom Sykes. An epic battle followed, with Marco passing Sykes and moving into a podium position with eight laps remaining. He then set off after Guintoli, who he passed on the brakes at the end of the Gardner Straight with just five laps still to run. Despite late challenges from the Frenchman, he held out to take second place, much to the delight of the Australian race fans and the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team.

There was also good news for the BMW Motorrad Italia Goldbet SBK team, as new signing Michel Fabrizio came out on top after a lengthy battle with factory Honda rider Jonathan Rea, eventually beating him by just 23 hundredths of a second to finish in sixth place. Leon Haslam took a pain-killing injection just before the race and was able to secure four championship points by finishing in 12th place, while Ayrton Badovini was forced to retire with just eight laps remaining, after struggling with rear grip issues.

Race two was just as entertaining. This time it was the injured Leon Haslam who made a lightning start from the third row of the grid all the way up to fourth place. With his RR superbike visibly sliding around Haslam was clearly pushing hard but ran wide on lap 3 and found himself down in sixth spot behind Sylvain Guintoli. However, he moved back past his French rival on lap 7, then managed to squeeze past Eugene Laverty on lap 10, and was then promoted back up to fourth place after Joan Lascorz crashed on lap 11.

With his own team-mate Melandri right behind him, Leon continued to push hard but ran wide on the Southern Loop on lap 12, letting Max Biaggi past. The remainder of the race saw the two RR riders successfully fighting off challenges from Frenchman Michel Berger to finish in fifth and sixth respectively.

Unfortunately, BMW Motorrad ItaliaÔÇÖs Michel Fabrizio and Ayrton Badovini both failed to finish race two. Fabrizio crashed on turn four on the fourth lap, while Badovini was forced to retire with a similar problem to race one.

TodayÔÇÖs results mean that Marco Melandri is second in the championship standings on 30 points, while Leon Haslam is in eighth ÔÇô a great result considering he underwent surgery just three days ago.

Marco Melandri: ÔÇ£I am really happy! Giving BMW their best ever result in only my first race on the RR is awesome. I still cannot believe that. The guys at the circuit and in the factory are working really hard and they have done a great job. We did not quite know how we would perform in the race as we had not done any long runs in pre-season testing. During the race I just tried to keep my rhythm and tried not to overpace as I knew I would have to look after the tyre. I had to wait for the right moment to pass Tom Sykes and Sylvain Guintoli. In the final two laps Sylvain was pushing a lot again, but I kept focused on myself and defended my position.

Race two was very difficult. It was warmer and I had to push harder to catch the guys in front of me, so it was not easy. But we finished the first weekend second in the championship, and that is better than expected. Now we have one month to analyse the data and to try to make even more improvements. We will go testing in Spain and all the guys are working hard. We all have the same goal and I very happy to see that motivation is high. Last, I want to send my sympathy to the family of Oscar McIntyre whom we lost yesterday.ÔÇØ

Leon Haslam: ÔÇ£IÔÇÖm really happy overall. We had a problem in race one which I couldnÔÇÖt ride around. Even though just scoring points was the objective, I knew I could have done better. The boys worked really hard between races: they changed engines, electronics and the balance of the bike and straightaway we were able to fight for a top five position. ItÔÇÖs a big credit to all the team and the medical staff who managed to get me out there in the first place! I also want to express condolences to the family and friends of Oscar McIntyre, who died in that tragic crash yesterday.

Bernhard Gobmeier, BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director: ÔÇ£Overall the weekend was very positive ÔÇô MarcoÔÇÖs second place means the best result for BMW Motorrad in World Superbikes so far. The weekend was a bit of a rollercoaster, but in the end we proved that the work over winter paid off. Still, we are not where we want to be, and that we have some areas to work on. And this is what we will do over the next couple of weeks.

ÔÇ£I am very happy about the performance of our riders: Leon having finished the second race in the top five is very impressive and makes everyone at BMW Motorrad very proud. MarcoÔÇÖs second place in the first race has been the best result for BMW Motorrad in this championship so far. He did an outstanding job and proved his qualities, and is now lying second in the World Championship. On behalf of the entire team and BMW Motorrad, I wish to pass my condolences to the family and friends of Oscar McIntyre, who lost his life in yesterdayÔÇÖs crash at Phillip Island.ÔÇØ

A method is provided for coating a surface of an Fe-based, hardenable sintered, sinter-forged or forged component, and in particular for internally coating the large end bore of a motor vehicle connecting rod with a bearing coating, wherein the coating material applied to the component surface is converted to a molten state during the coating process. A material bond, which is durable even under high loads, is attained between the coating and the base material of the sintered or forged component without any disturbing residual stresses by a simple manufacturing method due to the fact that during the coating process the component surface is briefly heated in the untreated state of the component above the austenitization temperature to a temperature level having a significantly increased diffusion rate within the limits of the outer edge zone having less carbon for reasons relating to the manufacturing process.

So what do you think you're going to do with that?

This was the question my parents greeted me with when I pulled in the driveway then dismounted from a Yamaha 125 I planed to make mine. I had anticipated the question and had an answer prepared. As you can guess my brilliant rhetoric did not win the day. The discussion with the understanding dealer went better and along the lines; 'We'll just think of this as a test ride. You'll get a motorcycle when you and your parents are ready.'

It was not that much longer until a slightly bigger, slightly more costly Honda and I would show up in the driveway; an early lesson in the cost of delaying things. This time the same question was asked with different tone and emphasis. I had an answer as I recall but for the life of me I don't remember what I told them. Yet all these years later I do remember the question because I have been answering it again and again each riding season.

This was the time when you met the nicest people on a Honda. No doubt I had images of some young lovely wrapping her arms around my waist as we rode off to the beach or some other destination. I have met a great number of nice people in my motorcycling career; however, none of the bikes I have owned was the babe magnet Mr. Honda and his marketing people lead that Fly-Over-Land teenage to imagine.

The announcement of the CRA schedule for 2012 reminded me of motorcycle and sports car club racing. I was a better crew member than pilot of either so my motorcycling was riding various bikes to various tracks to work in the pits. At the recent Fly-Over-Land motorcycle show I talked with a racing club about becoming a corner worker. [More on that at another time

A predictable BMW MOA forum thread a poster asked the opening question, Where do you plan on riding this year. The MOA is dominated by touring riders that spend their riding season racking up miles. Over the years I have made it to all but four states, all but one province and some miles on other continents.

Yet with all this in my background I still don't have a ready answer when people ask about my Roadster, 'So what do you think you're going to do with that?' Very few want to hear the answer my tank bag notes say I have come up with year in and year out since that first bike many years ago; I'm going to spend most of this seasons riding miles commuting.

Looking back over the years I have fewer miles than most but far more days in the saddle than many. These days were spent riding back and forth to all sorts of schools and a variety of jobs. I have no reason to suspect this year will not be any different. I still would like to have someone special wrap their arms around my waist as we ride off for some fun. I do plan on becoming a corner worker and riding to, but not in, race weekends. Lake Superior, along with some other destinations, is calling for another round trip. Yet as I get the bike, gear and myself ready for the riding season I know I will spend most of my saddle time commuting.

How long does it take you to commute to work?

Most hard core commuters can almost tell you down to the second how long it will take to make their commute. Most will be able to make split second decisions about alternate routes and the time impact they have when faced with accidents, slow starts to the day or other reasons to change their commuting pattern to keep the commute time as short as possible. Listen carefully and most will be talking about behind the wheel time.

When commuting with their motorcycle or any other mode is suggested they start with that behind the wheel time and add the new modes time encumbrances to it. In the case of motorcycling the x-minute commute to work is now increased by the time don gear. Let me suggest you measure your commuting time another way ÔÇô seat to seat.

I ran an experiment on my commuting as part of running an alternative transportation program for a company some time ago. I started my commuting clock when I put down my morning cup of coffee at home and got up to walk out the door. The commuting trip clock stopped when I sat down at my desk. I ran this experiment for all the commuting ways we were promoting in our program. My goal was to be able to answer questions and respond to obstacles our employees would raise. The seat to seat time measurement was an outgrowth of that experiment.

My trip clock would start when I set my morning cup of coffee down and get up to go out the door to work. It would run until I sat, dressed and ready to go, in my seat at my office desk. I must admit the car remained the winner in many cases but not all. Start times were the biggest variable that determined the winner not the mode of transportation. Surprisingly, at certain commute times my best choice was a combination of express and city buses.

I'm an ATGATT kind of guy so this measurement included the gear up / gear down time. My commute could take a freeway that allowed motorcycles to use the HOV lanes. The seat to seat times for bike and car were not as different as either side of the the argument might lead you to believe.

The answer to the question ÔÇ£How long does it take you to commute to work?ÔÇØ may have more to do with how you measure that time than how you make the trip.

FWIW:
Well the 2012 F1 season has begun and after two practice sessions if you can tell who is in first your a better fan than I.

I will be surprised if McLaren does not come out of this weekend with at least one podium spot. Jenson Button has my nod for the top spot this weekend. After that it is a free for all.

The season pick is another story. For the third year in a row I'm going to pick Sebastian Vettel to take the Driver's Championship. Last year I suggested it was season where it was his to loose. Red Bull clearly had the class of the field car and the young defending champion to pilot it. Button made a race of it as long as he could but Vettel dominated again. This year the championship is his to win. I do not see a clear cut construction leader; therefore, the title hunt is on the drivers shoulders. There are six World Champions in cockpits on the starting grid. I believe this is the year people will look back at as Vettel's legend defining championship.

Webber ÔÇô Strong showing in a supporting role for what will probably be his penultimate season.

McLaren : Both Button and Hamilton will be in the hunt. I think Hamilton is the stronger of the two but Button will get the better team resources. Internal problems and race day pushing leave them and their team down the podium.

Ferrari: Alonso will be frustrated as he fights for P3. Massa will not finish the season.

Mercedes: From wide bodied jets to training jets and now what appear to be real fighters this team will bug the heck out of both McLaren and Ferrari. I like Rosberg but I think Schumi will best him and a few others.

Lotus: This was going to be 2011 dark horse team if Kubica had been able to make the grid. They had a set back in the World Motor Sport Council ruling earlier in the year but the car does look strong once again. Grosjean is a big question mark. An even bigger question mark is which Raikkonen will take the grid; the world champion or the guy that seemed to sleep behind the wheel for most of the race.

Fighting for midfield honors and periodically moving up are Williams, Force India and Sauber. I wish Sauber all the luck in the world but I think they finish P3 in this section of the field.

The rest ÔÇô Toro Rosso, Caterham, Marussia and HRT in that order.

That are my 2012 F1 picks and cliff notes. Please don't remind me of them at the end of the season. They guys down at the Offical Fly-Over-Land Coffee Shop will be done laughing at me by then and will do enough teasing for all.

Once again HRT drivers did not beat the 107% rule in Q1 and are not listed with positions on the starting grid. Based on last year's precedent the race stewards will find a loophole and the other teams will agree and the will form row 12.
