Besides tires, there is nothing more hotly debated on various motorcycle forums than engine oil. Personally, I ascribe to this thinking: "Having engine oil is better than having no engine oil. Having engine oil at the correct level is better than having engine oil that is too low or too high. Having the correct viscosity/rating is better than the incorrect viscosity/rating. Finally - Having clean oil is better than having dirty oil."

Though it seems easy, BMW recommends a specific procedure for all twin-cylinder F650, F700 and F800 bikes and models.

Tools Required:
- Paper towel, rags, or your least-favorite t-shirt

Before checking your oil level, warm up your bike to operating temperature by riding, or letting the bike idle until the cooling fan comes on. Then place the bike on the center stand or have a friend hold the bike upright.

Clean off any foreign material by the dipstick, as we don't want any dirt to fall into the oil.
Note: the dipstick is located on the clutch-side of the bike

Unscrew the dipstick and clean it off with your rag, then place the dipstick back into the hole without screwing it in

Finally, pull the dipstick back out of the hole - making sure that the oil level is between MIN and MAX.

The oil level on this particular bike is at about 80% full.

If the oil level is too low: add oil, noting that the difference between MIN and MAX is approximately 1 quart.
If the oil level is too high: I recommend unscrewing the oil filter, dumping out the small amount of oil contained in the filter, and then reinstalling the oil filter with proper torque.

As a point of reference, here's what a completely clean dipstick looks like.
