With their level of skill, I would guess at the moment it's purely natural reaction and no thinking involved. If he had to think about it, he would already be sliding down the pavement on his face.
 
The hard part is not instinctively letting go of the bars. Once you conquer that part, your concentration can shift to what happens next and not opening the throttle.

These guys have talent we can only dream about.

Totally agree on this, a few times I've pulled an amazing save out of I have no idea where, and each time my conscious brain wasn't in control. I simply reacted and it turned out well. However at my skill level this is not a reliable method of dealing with impending catastrophe, ask me how I know!
