Tranny whine

CANADADAN

New member
Have spent the winter thinking about the work that my 75/7 needs and now realise I might be on the road in 8 weeks or so... so procrastination time is over!

I am considering taking my tranny apart to replace the third gear bearing. I am getting a whine in that gear only and 'assume' it's the bearing... could be wrong.

I am relatively ambitious but unskilled in this area of mechanics. I have no special tools at this time beyond a torque wrench and a good socket set.

Am I crazy to try this? There is apparently a very good shop here in western Canada I can ship the tranny to and have them do it for me but I would prefer to do the work myself if possible.

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

I hate to keep directing people to other sites, but go to www.boxerworks.com and so a search there, probably under 'transmission rebuild' or something like that. The guys over at BW are some of the most knowledgeable I've veer found and many of them are really deep into the hands-on stuff.

How bad is the whine? My 3rd gear has whined for almost forever, at least since the bike was about a year old, and that's a long time, and I've got about 90,000 miles on it. Have you checked the oil level? I don't think I would attempt to rebuild my tranny when it's time. There's plenty of shops that will do it right. It would be failry reasonable if you took the tranny out and shipped it to such a shop. Look in your BMWON magazine, I've seen some ads there. Point is, is that once it's back together, you don't want to have to have to tear it back down again for some mistake that a beginner might make. At least, that's my opinion for what it's worth...

I'll second Joe's opinion. There's a lot of fiddly stuff in these transmissions that is easy to get wrong.

Thanks Joe, nothing feels wrong in third, just the sound so maybe it is just something that third does...

All fluids are is good, changed every one at least once last season... tranny twice.

As I looked into this more I realized that I will NOT be attempting this myself... too much to screw up. There's a good shop in Alberta that I'll probably send it to when the time comes. There's only 60'000km on the tranny so it will be a while before I send her in. The clutch was just done two years ago so I can't see a reason I'll have her dismantled in the near future.

Thanks folks. Can't wait until we thaw up here and I start on the spring wake-up work. I should be able to work in the garage in about 4-6 weeks and ride in 8 or so. :clap
