My wife and I are planning a week to ten day ride from Southern Illinois to Trenton Canada and Niagara Falls area in August. Any suggestions about routes, good food, places to stay, must sees, or any other advice would be greatly appreciated. We are riding 2-up on an R1150RT and will combine some camping and some motel.

Return to the site of the 2002 MOA International rally in Trenton, Ontario, Canada, where BMW motorcycle riders and their friends come together again each year. Camp in the beautiful and spacious Centennial Park, right next to the Trent River and Lake Ontario. While in the area visit the National Air Force Museum, take a tour of Prince Edward County, enjoy a winery tour of some of the 25 wineries in the area and other interesting sites. See the Canoe Museum and the world's largest liftlock in nearby Peterborough. Seminars, field events, flea market, rider awards, and 50/50 draws for our local charity, Camp Trillium (a camp for kids with cancer). Music and dancing on Saturday night. 'Sidecars in the Park' returns for its 3rd year. And a special feature this year will be the Reunion of The Rolling Broccoli Riders (MOA #249) Pre-registration is $45 before July 1, 2010, at the gate the fee will be $50. This includes 3 nights of camping, hot showers, door prizes, Friday night dinner, Saturday morning breakfast, and a Saturday night steak dinner with all the trimmings. Rally pin & mug to the first 250 attendees, continuous coffee/tea/hot chocolate are available for free, as well as sodas/pop and water. Microman what is your starting point? Are your holidays set in stone or can you be flexible with the dates? If it works for you, you might want to consider starting at the RA rally in Vermont: July 29th - Aug 1st. I will likely be there, as will many of the others on this forum. Then a nice ride from there to the Falls, explore S. ON then end up at the Trenton Rally.

and i'd take the long way through the Soo, Manatoulin Island, ferry across to the Tobermory peninsula... to the rally and then to Niagra, then home to IL.
the Trenton site is one of the finer rally site's i've ever been too.

we hoped to do that as well Holly but that two week span sort of ended it for our schedule but it would be a wonderful plan. We were at the only Canadian BMWMOA 'national' rally in Trenton. Great time. See you at the RA though eh? Maybe the Salty Fog as well ... nudge nudge - Bob

I Used to Be Someone
Niagara Falls doesn't need anymore than 1-2 days. Arrive with a full tank, See the falls, take pics, walk around see tacky things, leave.
Do visit the Whirlpool Rapids, take the Maid of the Mist ride, (skip the trek behind the falls), tour Fort George, Fort Niagara and the touristy town of Niagara on the Lake. I've never taken a helicopter ride above the Falls. That's for my next visit. As well, I plan on visiting the American side to take the stairs to the bottom of the Falls.
A couple of times we've taken a tall sailing ship down the Niagara River and those damn Yankees have fired their canons at our vessel from Fort Niagara. Fortunately, our crew also had canons and returned fire. Causalities; none on either side and the buffet table was not hit.
The Falls is a good place to visit. Try to ignore the carnival. Unfortunately it seemed as if for about 10 years, we had many different English relatives and friends that would visit us and a trip to the Falls became an annual event. It does lose its lustre when visited too many times.
A winter visit is spectacular with the mist freezing on the branches of the trees.
In my younger dumber days, my friends and I would sun tan on the boulders in the Niagara River, just adjacent to the Whirlpool. It would require jumping from rock to rock to get to the largest ones. Good thing we never slipped or we would have been sucked down into the Whirlpool. Kids sure do foolish things.

Me too. I was born in the Falls and used to wander down to the Maid docks and play on the rocks all the time. Wonder any of us survived!
Paul's suggestions are good. When the CVMG rally was at Welland instead of Paris, I routed the Trillium Reliability Run past the Falls. George Bailey, head of the Niagara Parks Commission, arranged for us to park at Table Rock House, right at the top of the Falls. The only other people who get to use that parking lot are the Royal family. George's brother is a helicopter pilot who does the tourist rides. When Steve Reeves was in the Falls filming Superman, George's brother gave him flying lessons and has been able to brag ever since that he taught Superman how to fly.

Right now it is looking like I have to work in NH Aug 24th & 25th. Messes up my plans for the Salty Fog, but I have to pay for my riding habit somehow. I'm thinking since NH is one heck of a lot closer to NS, maybe I can get there for the farewells, then spend a couple of days enjoying NS on my own. And maybe the workshop in NH will be cancelled. Aug. is still a work in progress.

One of our CVMG members has a cottage on Manitoulin Island. I can get info for you. Plus there is a great motorcycle touring map of the peninsula up to Tobermory that I'll get for you. I did camp once after getting off the ferry from Tobermory in the dark. It was the first place on your right after you get off the ferry. Turned out to be very pretty in the morning, The owner was from Germany and he loved my old Beemer.

We're planning to take the ferry to Tobermory and ride/camp until 13th when we go to rally. From rally we will hit Niagara then head toward Illinois.
The information you mentioned would be very beneficial and greatly appreciated for fine tuning the plan and filling in Aug 10,11,12 before the rally at Trenton. What is the most convenient method for you to get the info to us.
