Where do you buy parts?

I haven't been on the forum in a long time. I haven't really done anything with my bikes other than ride them but I need to fix one and do an overall service on the other. My bikes are a 1977 and 1978 R100/7.
I admit I'm not the smartest or most computer savvy and I'm having a hard time finding a good website to buy parts. I'm sure I can buy from BMW but I would prefer not to spend so much. Is there one or more retailers that you guys use to buy parts from besides BMW? Parts I need or want are air and oil filters ( I did find what I hope is the proper oil filter), oil pan gasket and ignition rotor. I have found some of these parts but I'm worried that they may not be correct, especially the ignition rotor.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You can get the rotor from Rick at Motorrad Elektrik. Filters at Beemer Boneyard. Gasket - probably from a dealer (many will mail order - I use Engle Motors in Kansas City (even though I now live in Texas). Call them on the telephone - 816-241-7554 if using the computer to find the part is an issue for you.

Good used parts for airheads can be had from several places. When I lived in Columbus, Ohio I frequented Re-Psycle BMW. Another place that was in Texas was Airhead Cycle Salvage, although I do not know if that is a going concern at present. The classified ads in Airmail list used parts. BeemerBoneYard sometimes has used parts, but usually not for airheads----. Typically good used parts are about half that of new parts. links follow -

It's been about 5 years since I've done business with these guys when working on a 1978 R80/7:

Their selection and prices were good - note that they remove VAT from orders to outside of Germany.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm located near Seattle in Bellevue WA. I know there must be many places near me. I thought there might be a more consolidated website for parts. I'm also into VW Vans and there are a couple sources to get parts for them pretty easily, I thought there might be one for 70's airheads. Sounds like it's a little more work than one or two vendors who carry most things needed.

Zelten - I buy my BMW parts from either my local dealer or some from Tom Cutter. Air and Oil filters are not made by BMW and the dealer prices are quite high. Those I get online, buying the same OEM parts. I am sending you a PM with more info.

As a general rule, and without wasting money, if you can't afford the parts you can't afford the bike.

I agree with this. But I'm not going to pay twice as much for the same item if I don't have to. I don't mind spending what I must on something I need. But I don't go to the Chevrolet dealership to buy and air filter.

For filters I have had good luck on Amazon, they will list K&N or Mahle which is the OEM. Dealer I have used most is https://www.ascycles.com/, out of Roseville, CA, many times they run a month with free shipping on the parts. They have a micro fiche on line to make ordering easy.

I ordered some oil filters from Amazon. They're Mahl so I know they will be good as long as they are the correct filter. I'll look into ascycles and see what they have.

Thanks for the info

Which is why I suggested Beemer Boneyard for filters.

Parts is Parts

It's OK to be not so computer friendly for now, but the skill level for finding parts suppliers is a quick learn. Especially true as you can compare prices between vendors before dropping the bucks!
Do not fear buying electrical parts from Motorrad Elektric or EME. These guys know what they are doing and provide excellent customer service.
There is a lot to be learned about who has the best deals. Sometimes it is cheaper to buy from a European supplier than it is to get something from someone here in the US. Be aware that there are some companies who buy factory reject parts and sell them as OEM products. There was a reason that the factory rejected the parts.
On a final note, OEM parts on the whole will usually fit better than an aftermarket equivalent. I'm speaking specifically of control cables.

In fairness, Vech is a Vintage guy. He can get you anything, but his thing is pre-1969 vintage.

I would agree, but he slides easily into the early years of the Airheads. He's got two R90Ss in his museum as well as a couple of /5s. He offers parts for a wide range of Airheads. He has great connections with machine shops. His knowledge is very deep with BMWs. Can't go wrong with adding him to the list.

Parts for old BMW bikes...

http://www.realoem.com/

Use to look up the part numbers you need... You can enter your serial number and it will take you to the model and year your looking for...

http://www.hobbyist.nl/

They carry many original OEM parts that they acquired buying old stock from dealers all over Europe...

Prices are in Euros they are fair and will ship world wide... (the store in in southern Holland)

Turn on Google translator and you can read the site in english...

I usually make a list over 6 months or so and do one order for needed parts and expected wear out parts saving on shipping... Last minute repairs parts are still purchased at the dealer when available...

I Hope you find this helpful...
