Lewis and Clark Trail

Has anyone followed the Lewis & Clark trail from MO to West Coast? Anyone know of any GPS tracks for such a route? I'm riding a GS and wouldn't mind some off-road time. Thanks, Bob

MissouriMarine...

I'm currently reading Stephen Ambrose's "Undaunted Courage", so my interest is piqued a bit with your question. I recall a few years back there was a national HOG (Harley) ride that followed the Lewis and Clark Trail. But anyway, I went to the Bing Search engine and typed something like "Lewis and Clark GPS map" and returned was a "Travel by GPS" web site. Perhaps this will get you started...

In 2003 I spent a little over a month riding the Lewis and Clark Trail from Camp Dubois, in Hartford IL to the coast and back. Subsequently I have spent a good deal of time exploring individual segments of the trail as time has permitted. Sorry I am a paper map / get lost due to curiosity kind of traveler so can not help with GPS.

Which Lewis and Clark trail?
Not as glib a question as may seem on first read. The Corps of Discovery took a variety of paths as they worked their way out and back. There is a primary route for the westward passage but the Corp broke into two groups on the return trip. So which trail do you want to follow?

What do you want to see?
All together I have spent nearly six months riding the trail spread over several years and have only done a cursory exploration. A trip along the trail can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it. Read the journals (full or abridged) they are fascinating, there are several excellent trail guides (newer versions may have gps coordinates for sites) and start your online research with:

National Park Service/National Historic Trail – Lewis and Clark http://www.nps.gov/lecl/index.htm

Lewis and Clark Trail: http://www.lewisandclarktrail.com/index-old.html

University of Nebraska Lincoln: http://lewisandclarkjournals.unl.edu/index.html
This is a great online research site. Their press has one of the best complete sets of the Lewis and Clark Journals.

edit PS
There is a pre NW rally issue of ON that did a write up on traveling the trail. Also do a search on the forum for previous threads for information and possible people to contact for information and advice.

Lewis & Clark route

Thanks everyone for the advice. The comments and web sites are quite helpful. I've found a rider on the ADVrider forum (LewisNClark) who has a rather extensive library of data on the trail. He also has a DVD with all the trail GPS coords and original campsite locations. His first recommendation, BTW, was to read Undaunted Courage, which I've done. I probably can't spend enough time on the route to give it justice, but I'd like to give it a try since I'm in MO.
Thanks, Bob

Be sure to ride the Lolo Motorway if it's not snowed in.
