Not an Oil Thread..

I swear it isn’t.. but I do have a question specifically regarding Castrol GTX 20w/50 Classic oil. I bought a case to use in my ‘78 R100/7 due to the high zinc content. I had been using Castrol GTX 20w/50 4T. Got to wondering if I am missing anything specific by using the Classic over the 4T? Only thing I found in the Castrol webpage is that the Classic appears to have slightly higher levels of zinc. Not sure sure if I would benefit more overall by using 4T.

Or maybe it just doesn’t matter. In which case I apologize in advance for this post. Lol.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Amount

To be honest I think the difference in the amount of zinc from one to the other is most likely so small, you won't see any effect in the average lifetime by using the oil with the smaller amount. However this is not an issue as you are going to a higher amount of zinc.

You are doing well to use an oil with zinc in it. St.

I tested two types of Castrol dino oil in my article in the Mar 2013 ON. The issue is availability in the ON archives on the main website. In the end, those Castrol oils were OK as far as ZDDP goes, but there were a few others that were better. Valvoline VR-1 was one of those and is readily available.

I wasn't familiar with the Castrol GTX 20w-50 Classic oil. It is advertised as having 1400 ppm zinc and seems to be available on the 'zon. Best bargain is the 5 qt volume -

I've been using the Castrol 20w-50 4T motorcycle oil in my airheads; available from the 'zon, but not as good a deal as the 5 qt Classic stuff -

I have also sometimes used the semi-synth Castrol 20w-50 4T Actevo oil. At the 'zon, best deal seems to be 3x 1 gal jugs -

Have not had good luck with full synth oil in airheads; leaks abound! I do use the full synth in my oilhead and K75S bikes. Pricey unless one finds it on sale -

I use the Valvoline VR-1 in my 1993 R100GS.

Does that front muffler/collector have a catalytic converter?
VR-1 has a warning that it's not for use with cats; typically it's because the higher additive content can clog the little holes.
