BMW Sauber F1 3 January 2009

Back to the roots.

Robert Kubica has a busy winter. Right after the finale of the 2008 Formula One season, the Polish driver took a new challenge and set up his own team in karting.

Instead of having well-deserved holidays after finishing in fourth place in the Drivers' Championship and contributing to third place for BMW Sauber F1 Team in Constructors' Championship, the 24-year-old not only joined the squad's December test drives in Jerez de la Frontera, but also went back to his roots and tested the new karting chassis for his team.

"I've always enjoyed driving karts. It was a great fun to compete in karting - lots of competition and not so much politics," recalls Robert. Now he re-established his partnership with Birel - the company for which he scored fourth places in European and World Championships in 2000, right before switching to single-seaters.

The project also involves Robert's active participation in the management of the team which will take part in all major international events. Thus Robert follows the footsteps of World Champions Fernando Alonso and Kimi R?ñikk?Ânen, who run their own teams in karting and Formula 3 respectively.

"I wished to do something active in the world of kart racing, the discipline which allowed me to stand out and take the path leading to F1, and which I still love," says Robert.

I was born and raised in the 'Burgh and would throw in a :thumb for this event.
Schenley Park has always been the scene for sports car and bike events, including competition at various levels of organization. It's a great venue for a show, and vintage the race is through city streets.
If you really want to have a nice trip, show up a weekend early (July 3rd & 4th) for the Three Rivers Regatta, and take advantage of the bridges for a unique view of some fantastic Champboat racing action, among other things.
Oh, and a fireworks display over the water by the world famous Zambelli family.:usa

There's plenty of great riding around Pennsylvania for the week in between events.

600cc Inline four for BMW?

BMW will base their 600 on the same principle that let to the S1000RR WSB bike, a project based on picking the most competitive layout rather than the traditional BMW approach of picking a more individual format, so an inline four is the likely power plant.

Laugh-In---Very-interesting.jpg

Very Interesting

I wish I had more information for you on the picture but I don't and the source did not either.

BMW 600 or 675
BMW has made no bones about expanding into the sport market and taking the Japanese on. This is the impetus behind the S1000RR and as soon as that project was announced rumors began about a 600 class sport bike. The rumors have taken two forms.

In this current version the bike would be a four cylinder 600 that would be designed to go head to head, cc to cc with Honda Yamaha Suzuki and Kawasaki.

The other version of the rumor has a 675cc triple along the lines of Triumph. FIM rules allow 675cc triples and 600cc fours to compete in the same class. A triple would harken back to the K750 take on Triumph on the same terms while allowing BMW to compete with the Japanese.

I suspect the four is more likely. The link to the K triple would be of dubious value to the youth market. Triumphs commitment to a triple is more a function of their modern line being based on triples rather than any superiority in a triple. Add in the fact their are some changes in license fees for bikes over 650cc in EU which puts a 675 at an out the door price disadvantage and you end up with a BMW 600 being the most likely choice.
