Final drive 2011 R12RT

I've poked around here and there, and the only info I've been able to find on R12RT final drive oil-change intervals said do it every 12k. I think that's too short an interval. Anyone know what's right for a 2011 R1200RT?

Thanks.

That avearages out to a yearly service to most...12K is the interval. It's easier on the current bikes than it was pre-08/09. Just drain and refill w/out dropping the drive.

Some of us do it when we change tires...which is every few months on a few bikes.

I have a GS rather than a RT it's a 2011 has the same final drive change interval. My rear tires last about 6k miles so while the rear wheel is off change the final drive oil. Newer models it's about a 10 min job. I also have a dimple magnetic drain plug will give you a heads up if the bearings are starting to self destruct. 12k is a good point to carefully look at rear brake pads also if their close I change them. Same time good to check spline lube, again as long as wheel is off why not.

I have the maintenance DVD for the camheads but here's a summary someone posted for the first 60,000 miles.

I agree that it's a frequent change compared to automobiles that go forever before needing a differential change. And I have 2 cars that go 100,000 miles before they need spark plugs. Uh, and need no valve adjustments, ever.

But working on these things is a bonding experience, right? ;)

Does your dvd have his chart in kilometers? If so, could you post it?

My Canadian dealer's service manager had me come in at 600 km and wants me back at 6000 km for an oil change. Now, this may just be a reflection of a shorter season, colder conditions, and just conservative attitude.

I'd just like to see the official chart.

The offical chart is 1000 Km for the initial service and every 10000km for oil changes. the 12000 mile stuff is actually 20000km, etc. The Germans did the specs in km and they were converted to miles.

Round numbers for Canada, just like Germany!

trans and rear oil change RT

I checked my service requirements (2010 RT) and they show twice waht is recomended here. The tans should be changed every 20,000 kms and the rear drive every 40,000 kms

Oil change, valve clearance check and throttle body sync every 10,000km, which is about 6000mi. Final drive is every 2 years or 20,000km, which is about 12,000mi.

People have been confusing km and mi lately. I was just reading a thread on this forum about replacing spark plugs every 12000km.

This is for a cam head. Hex heads are slightly different when it comes to spark plugs and a few other things.
