Running on 1cylinder R1200GSA

Leaving work the other day my 07 1200GSA started and ran fine. A few minutes into the ride,at idle, I noticed the bike was running rough. Had to keep it above 2000 rpm to keep it idling. Seemed to run o.k above 4000 rpm. Took it to 7000 & all seemed fine. Idled well in the garage when I got home.
Today it started fine, but started running rough/lacking power as soon as I started moving . Since I changed plugs @ 80000 km (now 80300km on it) I figured easy fix, just change the plugs with the old ones. The left side plugs looked good & clean. The right ones were fouled/sooty. Changed the plugs anyway & no improvement.
I was thinking stick coils, but would both be gone?
Any ideas?

I've always wondered how the bikes would run if you lost a coil on one cylinder. Considering there are two per cyl. how would you know?
I experienced something similar on my 08 RT. It was obviously running on one cyl but seemed to clean-up after a minute or two. This happened after it sat for about three weeks. I called the dealer and the tech. said it was probably a sticky injector. He suggested I put some Marvel's Mystery Oil in the fuel to lube the injectors.
Well I did and it hasn't come back but then it cleared up anyway. He said the ethanol evaporates and makes the injectors stick. When I changed the plugs at 20,000 miles they all looked good.
You obviously have a fouled cylinder, please let us know what you end up finding out.

Dear Doug,

PLEASE read: http://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?t=46055 - I've added the info to your thread title.

Now - to your problem..

It's unlikely both stick coils have gone out at the same time. The "common" point where failure might occur is the fuel injector (since you only have one..) It might be worth running some Techron through the bike. It can't hurt and it might well help.

How to test the coils? Well - service manual says test by replacement.. which could get expensive (unless you live by me and stop over and try my spares.. but I digress..)

The way to test them is to disconnect them one at a time - leaving them on the plug, and disconnecting the wire feeding them. This wire is held to the coil by a connector, which is locked to the coil with a small clip. You have to lift that clip and wiggle the connector to disconnect the coil.

Disconnect one - start the bike. If it runs worse - that coil was working. If it runs the same - that is the bad coil. Repeat until you find the one that makes no difference.

Thank's

Thank's for the info. I'll try the injector cleaner first....sounds cheaper then buying 2 coils ;)
Don: info updated :blush

It lives !

Picked up injector cleaner & fuel. Added both and left for our monthly social meeting. 100 km round trip. The bike was real reluctant to start. When it did I kept the revs high. 10kms later it would idle :clap.
Thank's for the help :bow. Sometimes it's the simple things
