Americans Flunk Simple 3-Question Political Survey

PAULBACH

New member
Some news audiences are more politically savvy than others, according to a new poll, with readers of The New Yorker and similar high-brow magazines being the most knowledgeable.

The survey, conducted between April 30 and June 1 by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, measured the political knowledge of 3,612 U.S. adults. Participants were asked to name

the controlling party of the U.S. House of Representatives,
the U.S. secretary of state and
Great Britain's prime minister.

Overall, just 18 percent of participants answered all three questions correctly.

The first two were pretty easy and almost said Tony Blair for the third but he kept bad company and is now a former PM. Finally in a colorful burst of mental gymnastics I remember the present PM's name.

How did you do?

The answers are below:

More than 50 percent of Americans knew that the Democrats have a majority in the House, while 42 percent could identify the secretary of state (Condoleezza Rice). Less than 30 percent could name the prime minister of Great Britain (Gordon Brown).

i SALUTE you paul!

Gee I actually had all three correct and I'm not American.

I guess watching CBC and PBS is actually useful.............Rod.

Got all 3 correct, and I am also not an American. PBS and Discovery channel must be good for something.

As to some Americans not caring about number 3, they really should. I'll bet that more British Subjects could answer all three questions correct than Americans can.

For those that don't understand British Subjects, that includes Canadians, Australians, English, Scots, Irish, and numerous people from many other countries around the world.

:ca

Would hate to "Harp" on an embarrassing fact but I bet even fewer US citizens could name the PM of Canada. :ca

Isn't Canada part of North America? I remember being warned to refer to money
as US or Canadian, but not American because that might hurt some sensitive canooks
feelings that us loud, arrogant, demeaning, thoughtless and ethnocentric Americans
don't give all dem polar bears and eskimos up der credit for living on our continent!

Don't get dem a riled up. De last time dat happen dem folk came up the Potomac and sent de prez packing. :laugh

Sure, rub it in our faces that in the US high school seniors fail geography tests miserably. :cry

Canada? Its a suburb of Canton Ohio isnt it:whistle

:laugh :ca :wave

Dear Canada.
Buy as much of Florida as you want. But enough already with the old men in Speedos!!:gerg

OMG is that ever true! I grew up in Portland, Maine and as teens we haunted Old Orchard Beach. Old (especially for us) , fat men who were mostly from Quebec and wore those Speedo like outfits. Really awful.

But, back to the general subject. I went through all of my public schooling in the U.S. and if it wasn't for my efforts to even bring up the subject of Canada then not one mention was made in any class. Oh yes, they used to talk about the 'Eskimo'. Poor fools didn't know there really was no such peoples by that name. Hope things have changed there. -Bob
