Acadia and MDI, Maine

What's notable from this trip are the pictures I did not take. I have a customer in Northeast Harbor and this is the time of year they prepare for the summer population influx, which really doesn't start until July. The purpose of my trip was to get organs in three chapels ready for the season. I always take advantage of the area when I'm there because I work for myself and vacations lasting more than a few days happen about every 20 years.

The weather was awesome!

Torrential fog can be a lot of fun.

Eventually, it did burn off on day one.

But it never went away completely.

Today was a little brighter...

...depending on where I was.

This was taken by a fellow Vstrom rider who lives on MDI and builds boats for The Hinckley Company. A first rate tour of their manufacturing facility was the high point of the trip. Hinckley doesn't have much of a web presence, and why I didn't take the camera in with me will remain a mystery for the ages. World class boats for people who don't even have to ask how much they cost...

Bass Harbor, during a pause in our spirited back road ride last evening. Nice helmet hair, huh?

Nice , that first pic looks like the headless horseman :D

beautiful area, thanks for sharing

Nice pics. MDI is one of my favorite places in the world. Growing up in Maine, I've been going there for years, scuba diving at Little Hunter's Beach and to a "mini Thunder Hole" near Sand Beach in college not to mention enjoying a few brews at Geddy's in Bar Harbor. More recently, my wife and I sail there picking up a mooring in Northeast Harbor and at other times ride up on our bikes enjoying the twists of the Park Loop Road. The scenery is spectacular. It's a special place. Fortunately for us, it's not too far away.

Nice pictures and ride report Tom.:thumb Don't know how I missed it unless I was on the road that month. When that happens, I miss a lot of threads.

Thank you all for the belated support, it is firmly appreciated! MDI *is* my favorite place in the world. As to Thunder Hole, I've only heard it "working" once and that was on Dec. 10, 1980. Temps were unseasonably warm, about 55 degrees F, and every college student in the area was on the rocks. Overnight, the front came through with snow and a 40 degree drop in temp. The rangers closed the park and ticked me off. I didn't know about the winter entrance to "Ocean Drive" in those days. I surely do since then.

Thanks for posting!

One of the few areas in the US I haven't been or ridden - some day!

Your report gives me encouragement to make it sooner than later.

Very nice.
I was up in MAine a couple years back, we were on our way oop nawth, headed to Nova Scotia. Stopped in Bar Harbour and spent the night. Early June, basically a ghost town. Rode up Cadillac Mountain before we headed north. Really beautiful. US 1 going north from there really isn't all that, but we bumped into a local who suggested some alternate rods for us. We were able to take advantage of his route suggestions as we weren't in any rush that particular day. Any place where lobster is so prevalent as to be really inexpensive is OK by me!

The park loop represents some of the best coastal view riding for sure, from there north there are some interesting sites but few and far between. If you're looking for some great sea scapes, Cape Breton Island has some of the best.
