What I noticed was the lack of any centerline pavement markings.

Here in New York, they'd throw a fit if we don't get some kind of centerline markings painted within a day or two of paving...

Can't have a center line unless each lane is some minimal width. The road over the pass is about a lane and a half wide. If they put in a center line most vehicles would be either over the line all the time (or off the road).

This is common in California, on both state and county roads.
 
Dallas has a new landmark, opening in a few months. Passed close while trying to escape the city last Sunday. Looks like a large tennis racket head

On a back road near our place this morning...it's that kind of a day around here!

This new ranch compound on the hill used to be on a rough gravel road...took it this morning and somehow it got chipsealed:scratch...thanks, I guess!
