    Cool re-Chrome headers ? 2013 R1200RT, 70k+ miles

ok, my headers are getting crappy looking from many, many miles....i DO clean them thoroughly when i wash the bike, generally weekly....but the commute takes me close to the ocean and the salt air is prolly the problem...

so, any advice on re-chrome or ceramic coating of the OEM header would be greatly appreciated...

    TIA

    Wyman,

I had this on my '07 R, and considered rechroming and ceramic coating. I ended up buying a VG used set of headers from Beemer Boneyard. For me, that was a great solution

A couple of older threads. Re-chroming will work, but same dance as the single wall headers will eventually get to where you are now

I've used this stuff from Germany called Optiglanz. Ordered online and you just spray on and wash off with water. Made a big difference to my headers and wife's gs.

I had my '09RT headers ceramic coated by CCP Coatings in Detroit. About $200. Holding up well. Gotta be real careful when working on the bike, as this coating scratches pretty easily. Also wish I got my MachineArt Moto front fender extender installed BEFORE I rode through fresh oil & clay up in Vermont. Took a bit of effort to clean the headers after that trip.

Would suggest you call and discuss options with the owner. He's a very nice & knowledgeable guy.

    There's always Jet-Hot too.

I went with somewhat of a matt silver at the advice of the guy from CCP. I originally wanted shiny chrome, but he said it never holds up.

Oh yeah, we had a nice coating of red clay in Tucumcari,NM in construction zone detour one rainy morning...took some effort to remove the terra cotta glaze on the crossover and the flange area when we got home yeh! Two bikes!

Installed fender extenders after that lesson.

I've used jet hot coatings on the SS headers of previous oil heads and some ducatis. I was planning on doing my 2013 but the can't coat over chrome I found out. Bummer because it is a great product.

Chrome can be pealed, is just a process that can be reversed. Any place that chromes, can do it.And from there on, ceramic coat them!!

Then they'll turn goat-crap brown instead of sky-blue. I've had both. The blue on the chrome ones looks much better than the brown on the stainless ones. You can re-polish the stainless ones rather easily with a power-buffer, but first ride of more than an hour or so they'll be back to brown.
