I need to replace my alternator and was wondering what was the best way to go. I wanted to update it so I could use my electric gear. Tim

If cost is not an impediment to upgrading your charging system you could increase from 240 W (stock) to around 450 W with the Enduralast system or 600 W with the Omega system. The Omega system is from Rick Jones at MotorRad Elektrik (600 W must be new as I recall the prior offering being around 450 W) for $600. The Enduralast system is $500 from Euro MotoElectrics. Both systems seem to have a good reputation as do the vendors selling these units. I know folks with both (older 450 W Omega) and have had positive experiences.

Personally, I would purchase either with no qualms. EME appears to offer some less expensive options that provide lesser (but still more than stock) output - I have no knowledge about these systems.

Another option that is like an upgrade to the charging system, use LED lights for the headlight and running lights. I have done this and find the higher light output quite beneficial and demand less from the charging system. Replacement H4 bulbs and various LED running lights can be had from AdvMonster or SuperBrightLEDS. Links follow -

Electrical system upgrade

I installed the 600 watt system from Ted Porter (same system Rick has, so either supplier is good) on my R100RS about a month ago.

SO far give it HIGH marks, easy to install, output is GREAT. With heated vest (bmw), heated grips, additional running lights (LED) and the headlight on bright, the Voltage is stable at 14.5 VDC.

If you want to run heated gear and aux lighting, go for it!! :dance
