Crankcase Breather

OK, so i loosen up the starter, or can i loosen the solenoid?

There is a conspiracy of bolt blockage that made me remove the starter. Smarter mechanics may have done it without removing the starter, but I just pulled mine. Once you have it out it is a good time to clean all the connections on the starter and solenoid. Think of it as a bonus for replacing the breather valve.

You may find the bolts that attach the solenoid to the starter loose. They are subject to a lot of vibration.

Has anyone heard of any issues with leaving the old valve in? I have just purchased another 1980 R45 that runs beautiful, weeps no oil, but makes the turkey gobbling sound. I kind of like the gobble gobble sound. Makes it sort of unique. And sure takes people by surprise when sitting at a stop light.

I replaced the one on my other R45 as it was starting to weep oil in a few places. Once done, it stopped weeping.

Yes, I am weird and like the R45s. Little under powered, under stressed little beasties are great for running around town and the occasional highway sprint. Just takes a while to get up to top speed. But I'm not in any big hurry.

No isssues if they are working properly. But if they aren't, you will get oil in places you don't want it. If you have to go in there to fix one you might as well install the improved valve. If I understand what I have read, the turkey gobbler sound is a clear indication yours is not right.
