Help with 28 litre BMW Top Case

    Hello All,

    I just made an error.

I locked the top of my 28 Liter BMW Top-case without the top being in the closed position.
Now, when I press the cylinder in, the latches will not release.

    Any help?
The case is currently in use on my 2014 RT, but I have used it on my 2008 GT as well.

I don't have a topcase, and haven't had this situation.

When the top is in the closed position, something happens that allows the lock to release (when the key is turned or button pushed or whatever) and the lock can unlock. Thus, I'd guess that there's something in the meeting of the two pieces (top and main part of the case) that signals the lock that the top is closed, and permits the lock to open.

Look carefully at both sides of the top and main part and see how they fit together; maybe there's a tab or protrusion on one side that when pressed onto the other side allows the lock to operate. Perhaps you can spoof this joint and fool the lock into thinking the top is closed, and thus unlock it. I'd look most carefully at the lock side.

Hmm. Maybe one of the latch parts on the lock side (the "boy" part or the "girl" part) moves in some fashion when the top is in place, perhaps pushed in or pulled out or something, and that movement triggers the lock's ability to release.

    For those that are interested...

I had given up on being able to unlatch the case.

    Posted about it
    Called dealer techs..
Banged on the sides and back
    pried lightly on the latch
pulled a bit aggressively on the release
    nothin'

I decided I'd let a local tech tear it apart and fix it.

Jumped on the bike, closed the case as far as it would.. didn't even bungee it...rode the 15 minutes to the dealership.
Mostly freeway. Heard the top bangin' around a bit behind me... no big deal.

Arrived at the dealership, the tech walked around to the back of the bike , pressed the release button , and the latch opened.

Seems that the ride over, with a few bumps and such, freed whatever was bound.

    All fixed...
Tech said, 100 bucks??? I agreed, but left without paying.
